The Indiana Comptroller of State is an elected state executive position in the Indiana state government. The comptroller serves as the chief financial officer of the government of Indiana.[1] The comptroller serves a four-year term and is responsible for maintaining all State accounts, which include obligations to other governing bodies and individuals, such as state employee compensation and tax money distribution.[2]
Until July 1, 2023, the office name was Indiana Auditor of State. The title changed to comptroller when Gov. Eric Holcomb (R) signed House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1001, or the state's budget legislation.[3]
Current Officeholder
The current Indiana Comptroller of State is Elise Nieshalla (R). Nieshalla assumed office in 2023.
Authority
Article 6, Section 1 of the Indiana Constitution addresses the office of state comptroller:[4]
There shall be elected, by the voters of the state, a Secretary, an Auditor and a Treasurer of State, who shall, severally, hold their offices for four years. They shall perform such duties as may be enjoined by law; and no person shall be eligible to either of said offices, more than eight years in any period of twelve years. |

The comptroller is elected every four years during midterm elections (2022, 2026, 2030, etc.).[4] The comptroller takes office on January 1 following the election.[2]

Duties
The state auditor is responsible for maintaining all State accounts, which include obligations to other governing bodies and individuals (state employee compensation, tax money distribution, etc.).
