Hubert L. Grimes was a judge of the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court in Florida. He was appointed to this position by former governor Jeb Bush in 1999. He was the first African-American to serve as judge for this circuit. He retired from the bench on January 31, 2014.[1][2][3][4][5]

Biography and education

Grimes was born in Bartow, Florida on December 17, 1953. He received his undergraduate degree from Kentucky State University in 1975 and his J.D. degree from the University of Georgia School of Law in 1980.[6]

Career

Grimes began his career in 1980 at Central Florida Legal Services. He moved to the Central Florida Community Development Corporation three years later, where he served until joining the private practice law firm of Grimes & Polk, P.A. in 1985. In 1988, he was elected judge of the Volusia County Court. He served in that capacity until 1999, when he was elected to the circuit court. He served until his retirement from the bench in January 2014.[2][6]
