Homesharing
Homesharing refers to a direct exchange between a property owner and a renter whereby the owner allows the renter to stay on their property in exchange for money.[1] This exchange differs from services offered by hotels, inns, and other lodging services by allowing consumers to directly provide travel and lodging services to other consumers with limited interaction through an intermediary. Airbnb, VRBO, and HomeAway allow property owners to list their homes, apartments, and condominiums on mobile applications. Homesharing companies receive fees as a percentage of each stay recorded by the owners of listed properties. Homesharing is a subset of the sharing economy.
Usage
Ballotpedia uses homesharing to define this portion of the sharing economy rather than the phrase vacation rental sites recommended by the Associated Press Style Book.[2] This usage was selected because Airbnb and other companies facilitate rentals for business travelers as well as vacationers. The Google Trends chart below also shows the relative interest in these terms from July 2016 to July 2017 with homesharing drawing more interest than vacation rental sites as a search term.
