Former Ohio state legislator appointed chancellor of Ohio Board of Regents

COLUMBUS, Ohio: Former State Legislator John Carey was recently appointed by Governor John Kasich to serve as chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents. Carey replaced former Chancellor Jim Petro, also a former representative, who retired earlier this year. Kasich issued a written statement on Carey's appointment. He said, "John Carey is a thoughtful, devoted public servant who focused on job creation throughout his legislative career, and I am excited to see him inject this job creation mentality into the Ohio Board of Regents."[1][2]
Carey joins the Board of Regents as universities prepare to shift to a new higher education funding system that ties schools' funding more closely to their performance. Carey says his biggest goal will be to better align higher education to the jobs that are available in the state. He said, "Right now, we have thousands of jobs that are going unfilled because we don’t have people with the skills or the education to fill them, so one of my goals is to try to help to fill that gap."[1]
