State budget and finance information |
In 2014, federal funds comprised approximately 30.8 percent of general revenues in the states. State governments receive aid from the federal government to fund a variety of joint programs, mainly in the form of grants for such things as Medicaid, education and transportation. In 2013 federal aid to the states accounted for on average around 31.6 percent of all state revenue. Federal aid varies from state to state. For example, Mississippi received approximately $7.2 billion in federal aid in 2014, accounting for about 40.9 percent of the state's total revenues, the highest percentage of all of the states. By contrast, North Dakota received about $1.5 billion in federal aid in 2014, or around 16.8 percent of the state's total revenues, the lowest percent in the nation.[1]

Federal aid by state, 2012
The table below notes what share of the states' general revenues came from the federal government in 2012. Figures were calculated by dividing each state’s federal intergovernmental revenue into its general revenue. The number in the rightmost column indicates the state's ranking in relation to the rest of the nation (e.g., if "1," the state received the highest percentage of federal funding in the nation). In 2012, federal funds comprised approximately 33 percent of total general revenues in the states.[2]
