David H. Welles was a judge on the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals. He was appointed to this position in February of 1994 and was elected the following August. He was re-elected in August of 1998 and 2006.[1] His current term would have ended in 2014, but he retired on June 30, 2011.[2]
Education
Judge Welles was born on July 10, 1948 in Memphis, Tennessee. He received his B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1971 and his J.D. degree from U.T. College of Law in 1974. He is now married and has two children.[1]
Career
Judge Welles began his legal career in 1974 as a lawyer in Dresden. He worked in this capacity until 1987. During this time, he also worked as a part-time assistant district attorney general (1976-1987) and the chief clerk to the Tennessee House of Representatives (1977-1982). He worked as Governor McWherter's legal counsel from 1987 to 1994. He was then appointed to the Court of Criminal Appeals.[1]
