The Connecticut Secretary of State election took place on November 4, 2014. Incumbent Denise Merrill (D) was first elected in 2010. She faced Republican candidate Peter Lumaj and Green Party candidate Mike DeRosa in the general election. Merrill won another four-year term.
All three candidates for the office spoke about their priorities in the election, as detailed in the campaign themes section. The Democratic Party won the previous three races for Connecticut Secretary of State, though Merrill's 2010 victory was significantly narrower than the 2006 win for Susan Bysiewicz.
A primary election is an election in which registered voters select a candidate whom they believe should be a political party's candidate for elected office to run in the general election. They are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders. Primaries are state-level and local-level elections that take place prior to a general election. Connecticut utilizes a closed primary system, in which only registered party members may vote in a party's primary. However, Connecticut state law allows parties to decide whether unaffiliated voters can vote in their primary before each election.[1][2][3]

The time has come for real change. My slogan during this election is: MORE CHOICES, MORE VOICES. The two-party system dominates and distorts our political possibilities and our political choices. We need new ideas and new programs to build a better Connecticut. What better place to start than at the level of elections and the ballot access rules that frustrate real choices and real voices in CT? [5] |
