Cathy A. Bencivengo is a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. She joined the court in 2012 after a nomination from Barack Obama. Prior to her nomination, she served as a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of California. She was appointed to this position on December 5, 2005.[1][2][3]

Early life and education

Judge Bencivengo received her B.A. degree in political science and journalism from Rutgers University in 1980. The following year, she earned her master's degree in political science from the same school. She received her J.D. degree from the University of Michigan Law School in 1988.[1]

Professional career

After receiving her master's degree, Bencivengo worked for Johnson & Johnson. After four years, she left to attend law school. Her legal career began in 1988 with the law firm Gray, Cary, Ames & Frye. She worked for this firm and its successor until she became a magistrate judge.[3] Her practice focused on intellectual property cases. When Gray Cary merged with DLA and Piper Rudnick in January of 2005, she became the National Co-Chair of Patent Litigation.[1][4]

On May 11, 2011 Obama nominated Cathy Bencivengo to the United States District Court for the Southern District of California to a seat vacated by Jeffrey Miller.[5] Obama told the press, "These individuals have demonstrated the talent, expertise, and fair-mindedness Americans expect and deserve from their judicial system. I am grateful for their willingness to serve and confident that they will apply the law with the utmost impartiality and integrity."[2]

She was rated Unanimously Well Qualified by the American Bar Association. She had a hearing before the Senate Judiciary committee on September 7, 2011 and you can find her Committee Questionnaire available here and her Questions for the Record available here.[6]

On February 9, 2012 the United States Senate confirmed Cathy Bencivengo to the United States District Court for the Southern District of California with a vote of 90-6.[7]
