Wright served as Mississippi superintendent of education from November 2013 to June 2022.

Common Core

Wright worked on the transition of the Mississippi school standards to better align with the Common Core State Standards Initiative. The U.S. Department of Education approved a waiver for schools to retain the letter grade they received in the 2012-2013 school year if the grade from 2013-2014 had decreased. Wright said the decrease would be due to the state tests not aligning with the common core curriculum the students are using. State tests aligning with the common core standards were set to be implemented in the spring of 2015.[5]
