Campaign themes

2014

Schladweiler's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Mineral Development

The “war on coal” and ultimately the “war on fossil fuels” is not a wise approach for the United States or developing nations worldwide. My experience in various industries throughout the state provide me with unique insight into statewide issues impacting Campbell County.

Agriculture

Agricultural producers have shown historical concern for the longevity of the land and its resources. Much of what we enjoy today in open spaces in this state is due to agriculture’s wise stewardship. My tenure on the Campbell County Conservation District Board has provided me with a statewide understanding of issues related to agriculture production.

Business

As a business owner in Wyoming since the mid-1980s, I have seen many challenges to establishing and maintaining a business through up and down economic cycles. In general, Wyoming is a very business friendly state. However, due to our low population density, we cannot afford to not be business friendly on OUR terms. In the current environment of uncertainty and overregulation, we need to do everything in our power to attract and keep businesses in Wyoming for future generations. Many small businesses in Campbell County and the state have fewer than 50 employees. These small companies often have to adhere to things that are meant for much larger companies. As such a business owner, I would fight for positive business growth in Wyoming while looking out for the needs of these vital smaller employers.

Budget Issues

In recent years, the reach of the federal government has expanded greatly through legislation and executive orders. It has shown many times that it spends more than it takes in. We do not have a revenue problem in this country; we have a spending problem. These trends must be reversed as this is not sustainable.

Many states, including Wyoming, have shown they can more wisely budget, whether in abundance or lack of abundance of resources. Thankfully, Wyoming, while painful at times, is mandated to live within its means. On a state-wide basis, we are blessed that minerals account for a large amount of revenue. We in Wyoming understand this does not mean that there should be development despite all social and environmental costs but we understand the value of such sustained growth and development to the infrastructure needs in this state.

Medical Issues

As a small business owner, uncertainty in health care is an issue. The current state of health care in this country as defined by the federal Affordable Care Act has created many uncertainties on federal and state levels. I believe that Wyoming has not hastened to adopt a given plan to proceed amidst this chaos. The extent of how we as a state can be impacted should be studied, and I would support such an effort.

As part of the health care discussion in Wyoming, it is my deep held belief that mental health awareness and suicide prevention must be part of that dialogue. We are losing too many people in this state to that issue.

Mental Health

Education

As a child of two parents who had eighth grade educations, they instilled in me a passion for learning and encouraged all three of their children to pursue their hearts. Education is very important to me as an individual. Mine was to pursue my graduate degrees at the University of Wyoming.

I know that many people in Campbell County are concerned about Common Core standards. It is my understanding these national standards are developed with state input and implemented at the local level thru curriculum development geared toward local students. Those closest to the issues generated by these standards in Campbell County include the School Board, teachers and administrators, as well as concerned parents. I would defer to their wisdom and knowledge as I learn more on this vital issue for education in Campbell County.

I am a firm believer in the community college system in this state and feel they play a vital role in meeting, not only Campbell County’s, but also Wyoming’s future employment needs. We should be very proud of Gillette College and the vocational education complex we have in this county. Together they are providing workers for developing and existing industries in this state. It is important to consider the value of both these educational opportunities.[2][3]
