Issues

Education

In February 2014, McDermott announced his opposition to a controversial sex education program in Hawaii public schools. The program, taught in 12 public schools, is expected to be expanded by the Hawaii Department of Education. McDermott published a report entitled “The Pono Choices Curriculum: Sexualizing the Innocent.” The program is designed for schoolchildren aged 11 to 13 and taught in 1,700 middle schools. While the Hawaii Department of Education allows parents to opt out their children from the education, McDermott disagreed with this exception. “The parental opt-out forms are woefully inadequate. They lack clarity and transparency by concealing some controversial aspects of the material,” McDermott said.[3]

2022

Bob McDermott did not complete Ballotpedia's 2022 Candidate Connection survey.

Campaign website

McDermott's campaign website stated the following:

Red Hill

McDermott Supports a complete closure and decommissioning of the Red Hill fuel farm. As a USMC gulf war veteran, he understands the needs to balance national security with our environment. Only Hawaii elected official to develop a plan to remove the fuel.

Inflation

Perhaps the cruelest tax of all is the insidious attack of inflation precipitated by an ill-advised monetary easing policy with no end in sight amplified by a wasteful and undisciplined fiscal policy. These poorly thought out fiscal policies discourage work and perpetuate government dependence.

Gas Prices

The Democrats declared a war of fossil fuel and the American people lost I want cheap abundant energy that all Americans can access. The night Joe Biden got elected gas futures went through the roof. Biden reentered the United States in the Paris Agreement, revoked the Keystone XL pipeline’s permit and ordering a moratorium on new oil and gas leases on federal land and water areas created a chilling affect on the oil industry directly driving prices through the roof!

Immigration

The current Biden open Boards policy is harmful to Americans security relating to terrorism, drugs, and human trafficking. For Hawaii, it is an insult to those of our fellow citizens who followed the rules and immigrated to America legally. They did it right, now they petition for family members who must wait years, while those south of the Boarder walk right in. Unfair.

Transit

The City and County of Honolulu has been plagued by an over budget, behind schedule rapid transit project that is about 3 billion over cost. The local taxpayer of the City and County needs some relief of this suffocating tax burden, I will get the federal funds to help offset this debt to my best of my ability.[13]

—Bob McDermott's campaign website (2022)[15]

2020

Bob McDermott did not complete Ballotpedia's 2020 Candidate Connection survey.

2012

McDermott's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Environment

  • Excerpt: "A viable and sustainable solution to reducing our waste stream, creating renewable electricity, and lowering the City’s wastewater treatment costs has arrived – It's called Super Critical Water Oxidation. This innovative technology is up and running in the pilot plan phase in Orlando, FL and Cork, Ireland. Results have been so promising that both municipalities are breaking ground on commercial size operations at the time of this writing."

Homelessness

  • Excerpt: "One of the major issues will be facing is the growing population of homeless in our parklands. I offer no slogan or quick fixes as there are none, however, below is my view of the situation as I see it in brief. The Homeless issue is a complicated one, with no easy solutions. Recognizing that the homeless and poor have been with us since antiquity, it requires a thoughtful and deliberate approach."

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Hawaii

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of Hawaii scorecards, email suggestions to [email protected].
