Marx ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. House to represent Hawaii's 2nd District. Marx sought the nomination on the Democratic ticket. The signature filing deadline was June 5, 2012, with the primary taking place on August 11, 2012. Marx was defeated by Tulsi Gabbard in the Democratic primary.

• The Economic Crisis: Excerpt: "We need a tax policy that favors income made with work and not speculation. Presently, money made with money pays lower tax rates than wages or salaries. We need mortgage policies that rebuild the middle class homeowner. A nation-wide prohibition against deficiency judgments will get the millions of homeowners who have lost their homes back into the market faster and housing can and will rebound."

• Jobs and Economy: Excerpt: "The focus needs to be on creating new jobs and retaining the ones we have. Policies that reduce taxes and cut governmental mandates create real, private sector jobs so that American entrepreneurs and small businesses can put citizens back to work. Advocating for pro-growth policies, working to lower taxes on the middle-class, and putting more money in the pockets of Americans is what it will take to get our economy back on track. "

• Energy Self-Sufficiency: Excerpt: "I will work to support alternative energy development in areas such as wind, geothermal, and solar power. Living in Hawai`i our need for alternative sources aside from imported oil is even more crucial since we are an isolated island state. We also need to develop our own oil reserves here in American as importing foreign oil is bankrupting this country."

• Agriculture: "I support Veteran’s Low Interest Farm and Home Loans and support Irrigation and Development Funds to help farmers and rural Hawai`i gain proper irrigation and potable water systems. I will fight for farm disaster assistance programs currently being cut that aid farmers in cases of flood, wild fire, volcanic eruption, and other natural disasters."

• Affordable healthcare: Excerpt: "Protecting Medicare and Medicaid from budget cuts will ensure that our seniors stay healthy and are able to enjoy their retirement years. It is also important that we recognize that need for couples of all genders, races, and ethnic backgrounds, to be protected and ensure that they are able to enjoy the health care benefits of their working spouses."

• Senior Citizens: Excerpt: "I pledge to fight for Social Security benefits for those who currently receive them and for the future recipients of this program. I will fight to ensure that all Seniors are able to receive the Medicare benefits that are entitled to."

• Labor Issues: "We must support workers rights and better working conditions. Workers’ rights created America’s middle class and I will fight the many efforts to destroy hard-won worker’s rights."

• Confronting Real Issues: Excerpt: "The current economic crisis is the direct result of government irresponsibility in budgeting, spending, regulation, and taxation. This irresponsibility along with individual irresponsibility in over-borrowing has led to the greatest financial crisis since the 1930’s. Tax loopholes for hedge fund operators, oil companies and offshore havens should be closed. Tax fairness for the middle class must be improved. It is just wrong that the wage earners of many corporations often pay a higher tax rate than the corporations’ Chief Executives."

• End War Profiteering, Investigate Use of Funds: "We need greater transparency regarding the war contracts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Congressional hearings are needed to investigate where billions in funds that was sent overseas to Iraq and Afghanistan went. There needs to be some accountability for that fact that much of that money may have went to buy favors and loyalty of war lords and tribal chiefs."

• Afghanistan: Excerpt: "It is imperative that Pakistan not be allowed to become a failed state led by extremists. Pakistan is a nuclear power and has already shown signs of selling its nuclear secrets to unstable regimes. Our goal of halting the proliferation of nuclear weapons would be severely compromised if we do not bolster Pakistan’s stability and security."

• Veterans Affairs: Excerpt: "Special attention is needed to provide better outer island facilities and programs. The United States should provide veterans with the care and support they have earned fighting to protect this Country. It is unacceptable that many of our veterans find themselves unable to count on quality medical care and educational opportunities when they need it. When we find that many of our veterans are homeless and jobless, we cannot turn the other cheek. Our veterans deserve a commitment from Congress that is strong and unwavering."

• Fiscal Responsibility: Excerpt: "Restoring fiscal discipline is imperative. The current Administration took the initial steps to restore fiscal discipline by signing into law an economic recovery bill that is free of all earmarks and by launching Recovery.gov –an unprecedented effort to allow the public to track how and where recovery funds are actually spent."

• Education: Excerpt: "Formulating policies that continue to award school systems financially in competing with other nations in math and science, will promote incentives for success which in turn will benefits the future of our nation. Continuing to support students from an early childhood education through secondary education, and working to make college more affordable and accessible to all students, regardless of financial ability is key to raising the bar in education. With the rising cost of a college education, supporting and providing more scholarships and increasing Pell Grant funds for students who are committed to furthering their education, especially those in the fields of science, technology, math and engineering, is important to a healthy economic future for Hawaii. Good public schools, good public universities, and good technical training will give us a workforce better than any in the world. Well-trained workers are cost effective and they give us a powerful competitive advantage in international markets. Investments in our people in turn pay the highest dividends."

• Native Rights: "I staunchly support Native Hawaiian Recognition, for the preservation and return of Hawaiian land. I am also a strong advocate for Hawaiian history, culture, and language in our schools and universities. Our justice system must be sensitive to bias against all citizens."

• Equality for all Americans: Excerpt: "I strongly believe that we should be able to choose who we love and spend our lives with as well. Whether we choose to spend our lives with someone of a different ethnic background, religious affiliation, economic class, or even of the same sex, I believe that we should not pass judgment and discriminate simply because we do not agree with someone’s choice. We have anti-discrimination legislation that supports equal hiring practices and equal opportunities regardless of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, or one’s physical or mental disabilities. I support enabling legislation that would provide the same benefits to domestic partners as they do to married couples."

• Renewable Energy: Excerpt: "If we invest now in 21st century energy, we can lower the costs of production of all of our future work. Right now, renewable energy competes with old, outdated energies that receive subsidies and incentives in Washington. Hawai`i has the ability to become a leader in using renewable energy sources (geothermal, wind, solar, hydropower, ocean thermal and wave energy) to cut production costs and to make our products competitive around the world. Again, we could do this right here, right now and create jobs for the people of Hawai`i instead of sending those jobs overseas."

• The Environment: "We need to work together on reducing plastic waste that is destroying the Pacific Ocean. Recycling initiatives has already begun to take effect here in Hawai`i with much success. We need to continue this effort keep our Islands and our planet healthy for the future generations. I served as legal counsel for the successful effort to “ Save the Nanawale Forest,” which is one of Hawai`i’s last natural hardwood forests."

• A Livable Minimum Wage: Excerpt: "Wages have stagnated for years and could be revitalized by raising the minimum wage to a livable wage and joining into the Consumer Price Index, so that the consumer prices float upward, so does the base level federal minimum wage. Under the current system, consumer system, consumer prices for goods and services have risen enormously in recent decades, but real wages have not kept pace with such real increases in the cost of living, disproportionately eroding the standard of living for the non-wealthy."

• A Fairer America: Excerpt: "I support cutting taxes for the middle class and making the rich pay their fair share. I strongly believe is just simply wrong that an investment fund manager who makes more than $1,000,000 per year pays a lower tax rate than their hard working secretaries and janitors."

Marx is the grandfather of three and father of four children. Marx raised his youngest child as a single parent after the death of his wife Hiromi Tsuchiya-Marx in 1998.
