The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was July 10, 2014. Thomas Schiliro was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while incumbent Anthony Palumbo was unopposed in the Republican primary. Schiliro ran on the Working Families Party and Independence Party of New York State tickets and Palumbo ran on the Conservative Party and Independence Party of New York State tickets. Palumbo defeated Schiliro in the general election.[6][7][8]

Palumbo won election in the 2013 special election on November 5, 2013, for New York State Assembly District 2. The seat was vacant following Daniel Losquadro's (R) election as Superintendent of Highways in Brookhaven Town. Palumbo defeated John McManmon (D) in the special election, which took place on November 5.[9][10][11]
