I am the mother of a first grader attending Emerson School in the Phoenix Elementary #1 District. I have served as President of the Parent Teacher Organization, a member of the site council, and an am an active supporter of PECTA. As a researcher and PhD in Education I believe that parent involvement in our public schools is critical and that public schools are the key to student success. Born and raised in Arizona to working class parents I attended public schools. I benefited greatly from having a diverse group of teachers and peers. I found my love for education in the classroom as a high school student. I taught Kindergarten after finishing my Bachelors in Early Childhood Education and M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. I am keenly aware of the obstacles many of our teachers face. My desire to serve the community has led me to volunteer internationally, foster 9 children as a licensed provider, serve as elected chair for the local moms' organization and my neighborhood children's' committee, and develop an in-home play-based preschool. I am running for governing board to ensure parent voices are heard and our schools are equitable for ALL students, teachers, and families.

  • Equity: The 14 schools in our district are currently funded and run inequitably. I believe all of our students should be provided with the supports and resources they need and best practices should be implemented in every classroom.
  • Funding: I will advocate to fund small classroom sizes and teacher salaries.
  • Communication: I will encourage the district to consistently communicate with families and provide opportunities for their voice to be heard. Parents are children's first teachers and should be actively included in the decision-making process.

I am passionate about policies that affect children and families and education. I believe we need policies that support parents and provide opportunities for all students to succeed.

I look up to strong women who speak their minds even when it is hard. I believe we need more female leaders in this country who will fight for equitable rights for all people.

Being an active listener allows an official to hear the concerns of constituents and respond accordingly.

I actively reach out to stakeholders for feedback. I am determined and will always fight for whats best for kids.

The core responsibility is listening to stakeholders and shaping policy that is good for kids.

I would like my children and students to remember me as a force who ensured policies were good for families and teachers.

I remember waking up to the news of 9/11 as a Junior High student and spending the day at school watching news and praying for the families.

My very first job was a babysitter for my neighbors two year old while her and her husband were working long hours. I was 12 years old and paid $2 an hour. I worked for them regularly for years.

Michelle Obama's Becoming. She is incredible!

I am a first generation college student and military spouse. I finished my Phd while my husband was deployed and I was home caring for my four year old son.

The primary job is to approve policy and approve the budget. How a school district spends their money shows their values.

My constituents are teachers, staff, family members, and community members.

I would begin by listening to stakeholders and holding regular town hall forums and shape policy based on the feedback received.

I will target businesses and organizations that can partner will our schools to improve the educational opportunities available to our students.

I will begin by holding regular town hall forums that are accessible for parents who speak a variety of languages. I will be accessible through social media, email, phone, and to meet with parents in person. I believe it is important to visit schools monthly and follow school events as well.

Absolutely, I am currently engaging in conversations with the AZ Alliance of Black School Educators to ensure our staff is diverse.

Budget is always an obstacle. I think partnering with larger organizations and focusing on what students and teachers really need will help.

Teaching should support the child. Teachers must differentiate for a variety of academic levels and learning styles. I will support these practices by ensuring policies allow teachers the autonomy to do whats best for kids.

Students need social emotional learning, the ability to problem solve, and a strong understanding of technology.

A 21st century diploma should reflect a broad education that challenges students to consider how to engage in society and solve local and international problems.

I would lobby at state and federal level as well as encourage voters to vote yes on Prop 208.

I believe social emotional learning is a driving principle for connecting with students and being proactive about safety.

I am an advocate for social workers and psychologists on all campuses.

I imagine online learning continuing in the future and the district needs to plan to keep students a part of the district wide community while learning virtually.
