Campaign themes

2017

Valente's campaign website included the following themes:

I am running for office to focus on the following:

  • Population Density – Over the last 10 years, I have seen Plano grow tremendously with regards to its density. Plano must not compromise the success of its schools and the quality of life that have been a hallmark of the city. The protection of Plano's suburban enviroment is extremely important to me.

  • Public Safety – Plano has been recognized as the safest city in America with a population over 250,000 for two years in a row. It is crucial that we maintain our safety by investing in our police and fire departments through supporting adequate levels of personnel and providing them with the resources and training required to perform their jobs effectively.

  • Transportation/Mobility – While much of our congestion is the result of our increasing density, increased traffic can also be attributed to those who come to Plano to work or pass through Plano to the surrounding communities. Improving transportation is more than widening roads or timing stop lights. Innovative solutions will be required if we are going to improve our congestion.

  • Water – Water rations are not new for Plano but with increased population in surrounding communities, water is becoming a finite resource. Additionally, Plano is paying the Water District for water that is not being used by its citizens. I want our city to have access to new sources of water and to pay for the water that is uses.

  • Revitalization – While portions of Plano are brand new, many other parts are aging. I would like to focus on opportunities that the city has to redevelop under-used properties and refurbish portions of the city that are showing their age.[3][4]
—Alfonso Valente (2017)

Valente detailed the following platform in response to a questionnaire from Community Impact Newspaper:

Plano is an amazing city. I feel so blessed to be a part of this excellent community and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. The success of this community has been the result of the wisdom of past generations. The vision that it took to plan the city when it was just corn fields and the pro-business environment that has kept our tax rates the lowest of the major cities in Collin County is nothing but enviable to others. Both Plano and North Texas are experiencing growth that is getting international recognition but with this growth come challenges. Public safety, population density, transportation and water are essential to our quality of life. While Plano is long past the days of being a farming town, the mature state of the city and the final opportunities for growth must be carefully measured. Citizens must be educated on the issues and given a chance to fully express their thoughts and opinions. Plano needs to continue to attract quality employers while being careful when considering high-density housing. We need to move toward to the future while preserving our past.[5][4]
