A tracheal tube is a catheter that is inserted into the trachea for the primary purpose of establishing and maintaining a patent airway and to ensure the adequate exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Many different types of tracheal tubes are available, suited for different specific applications:
An endotracheal tube is a specific type of tracheal tube that is nearly always inserted through the mouth (orotracheal) or nose (nasotracheal).
A tracheostomy tube is another type of tracheal tube; this 2–3-inch-long (51–76mm) curved metal or plastic tube may be inserted into a tracheostomy stoma (following a tracheotomy) to maintain a patent lumen.
A tracheal button is a rigid plastic cannula about 1inch in length that can be placed into the tracheostomy after removal of a tracheostomy tube to maintain patency of the lumen.
History
Portex Medical (England and France) produced the first cuffless plastic 'Ivory' endotracheal tubes, in conjunction with Magill's design later adding a cuff as manufacturing techniques became more viable, these were glued on by hand to make the famous Blue-line tube copied by many other manufacturers. Mallinckrodt GmBH developed the disposable endotracheal tube and produced a plethora of design variations, adding the 'Murphy Eye' to their tubes in case of 'accidental' placement of the tube to avoid right bronchial occlusion. David S. Sheridan was one of the manufacturers of the American markets "disposable" plastic tracheal tube now used routinely in surgery. Previously, red rubber (Rusch-Germany) tubes were used, then sterilized for re-use..
Endotracheal intubation is a skill that is learnt through practice under expert supervision. This video lesson prepares you for these practice sessions, with focus on the manual skills that makes the difference between failure and success. It has an interesting history, which I talk about, but there are many different parts of the tube from the tube itself, the tip, the cuff and connector, which I review over each of those parts here. Suctioning the endotracheal tube - medical animation
Endotracheal suctioning (ETS) is a necessary practice carried out in intensive care by nurses. As shown in this medical animation, It involves the removal of pulmonary secretions from a patient with an artificial airway in place. Suctioning clears mucus and is essential for proper breathing as secretions left in the tube could become contaminated and a chest infection could develop. This is imperative if surgery is a requirement.
After intubation, the closed-suction technique is the preferred method for suctioning because the patient is connected to the ventilator throughout the suctioning procedure which facilitates continuous oxygenation. The closed-suction technique allows for a continued tidal volume delivery to the patient with minimal loss of lung volume. Closed suctioning is sugge...

Closed suctioning is suggested for an adult patient with high fraction of inspired oxygen (FIO2) or positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) or for a patient who is at risk for lung derecruitment.

In this video we have given all the ET tube Nursing care which should be done on a daily basis for every intubated patient. Endotracheal tube care is vital to save a patient during the period of artificial mechanical ventilation. Do follow the checklist of ET tube care explained for better prognosis.

In this video, George is prepped for a procedure and opts for an oral endotracheal intubation via Glidescope. Watch the process from awareness to full loss of consciousness. Special thanks to Leva Anesthesia Respiratory Therapist, Dr. Sam Montasser and RN Joyce (camera person) for their participation in this video.
