In the interest of expanding our long-term experience with plug-in hybrids, a segment that keeps growing in popularity as it splits the difference between EVs and hybrids, we welcome a 2024 Kia Niro PHEV to our fleet for 40,000 miles.

The Kia Niro PHEV pairs a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine with an 83-hp electric motor sandwiched between the engine and automatic transmission.

While the gas engine itself only produces 104 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque, net output for the combined powertrain is a solid 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

We opted for the SX Touring trim, which starts at $41,515, or $5750 more than the base trim.

SX Touring models get larger wheels, a power sunroof, a power liftgate, an upgraded audio system, and front seats with both heating and ventilation.

We tossed in some $175 carpeted floor mats and a $95 cargo mat, bringing our grand total to $41,785.

The Niro's interior is pretty straightforward, offering a mix of touchscreen and physical controls.

The seats aren't too bad either!

The Niro arrived with its break-in completed, so we were able to test it right away.

The Niro PHEV made it to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds and finished the quarter mile in 15.8 seconds at 89 mph.
