Subaru is previewing the next iteration of its popular S version of the even more popular WRX STI. The aptly named Subaru WRX STI S210 Prototype is a preview of what’s to come from Subaru’s performance arm later this year. This special edition is making its debut at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon.

Powering the latest WRX STI S machine is a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer. This FA24 sees a new intake, new exhaust system, and a reworked controller and now pushes 300 hp through the Subaru Performance Transmission. That’s right, this limited-edition WRX STI won’t get a manual and is the first WRX STI to sport the brand’s continuously variable transmission. That said, Subaru did retune the CVT to work better with the bump in power.

This special Subaru rides on a set of 19-inch STI Flexible Performance Wheels that are wrapped in 255/35 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. Making the most of these wheels and tires, Subaru reworked the suspension with new springs and specially tuned electronic dampers. New stabilizer bushings also make an appearance at the rear.

On the inside, the WRX STI S210 features Recaro eight-way power seating in the front. These seats also pack carbon-fiber back rests and red accents with black upholstery.

While it’s good news that the Subaru WRX STI is making a return to the lineup—and the S-variant only makes it more interesting—there is some bad news. This WRX STI S210 will be capped at 500 examples globally. More importantly, Subaru hasn’t mentioned what regions will be getting this machine, or how many will be divided per region.

There is some hope that Subaru ships some of these to the United States, which would be a follow-up to the WRX STI S209 that brought the S-variants to the here. Subaru says that it should have this figured out by spring 2025.
