tonight, for the first time ever, an iconic san francisco restaurant opened for business. this thanksgiving holiday. >> we're out in droves and we're bustling. as you can see, there's people waiting to come in the door. >> nobody had to cook, so it was super fun. >> everything was excellent. >> a historic move by john's grill and san francisco's union square. good evening everyone. >> i'm frank mallicoat, and i'm jana katsuyama. tonight, hundreds of people gathered at the restaurant for that special thanksgiving dinner. and ktvu is amber lee joins us live now in the studio. a busy night you can see from the pictures at john's. and how did it go? having them open the first time? >> it looks it went really well. frank. jana. the john's grill opened in 1908. the owner tells me the restaurant has never been open on thanksgiving day. during its 116 years in san francisco. when we arrived there this afternoon, we saw diners lining up outside and inside. all three floors were filled.

>> so definitely be closer to 530. i'll get you checked in. >> open for business. hang out right in front. a first for historic john's grill in san francisco's union square. and it's also a break from tradition for diners. >> we're actually from livermore, and we are really excited. we kind of wanted to do a thanksgiving day in the city. we never really normally we do a big thanksgiving, and we thought it'd be fun to come into the city attracting people to the city. >> one reason why the owner of the restaurant decided to open on this holiday. >> it's so important for us to be a part of bringing back downtown and san francisco and just all the fixings for a thanksgiving meal, and more and enough food for the 1000 plus diners in search of a holiday meal away from home. >> we had pasta and steak and lamb chops, and it was nobody had to cook, so it was super fun. >> we usually have the family over and it's usually a hectic, so it's kind of relaxing. >> among the diners was former

san francisco mayor willie brown for thanksgiving. what does it mean to you to be out here? >> well, the thanksgiving is a good thing, frankly, because i have an opportunity to say hello to lots of people. >> the restaurant owner says turnout on this holiday exceeded expectations, and he has much to be thankful for, including the staff members who made opening on this day possible. the john's grill team will celebrate after the last diner leaves. >> i ended up buying a bunch of ten ounce australian lobsters to give to the entire team, and we invited their family and friends. so it's going to be a big party here at john's grill with the whole the whole john's grill team. >> there was a constant line outside the restaurant. walk ins were welcomed, but there was a wait. the owner tells me it's so successful that this will become a new tradition to be open on thanksgiving and i want to wish everyone happy thanksgiving. >> jenna. frank. yeah. >> i'm curious, what was the vibe like in the city on thanksgiving night? >> you know, the area was kind of quiet, but right where john's

grill's restaurant was not so much, not so much packed inside. >> yeah. >> and we're looking at the food behind you. i mean, it's like the turkey it sounds like it was a traditional thanksgiving dinner. did he have. i know he has so many other specials that people love. >> there were options. they had a seafood pasta, lamb chops. so you didn't want the traditional meal. you have that option. >> and we heard lobster too. >> i think lobster for the staff. >> okay, well that's not all ba. >> yes, for people who work on thanksgiving day. thank you so much. >> great stuff. >> okay. thank you much. well, earlier today in san francisco as well, 300 law enforcement officers all gathered in chinatown to celebrate thanksgiving by giving their time to others. police officers, sheriff's deputies, park rangers and firefighters alike all helped deliver meals to people who didn't have holiday dinners. >> thankful to be here. we're thankful and happy to serve this county. great, great city of san francisco. and most importantly, we're here to give back to the community. some people here,

some elderly people can't leave their homes and get food. we're going to go deliver food to them at glide memorial church, the dining room was full with volunteers serving their annual thanksgiving meal and just a couple of blocks away. >> saint anthony's held its 74th annual thanksgiving meal for the community, saying they want to have space for everyone feels seen, valued and loved. >> one reason to be thankful this holiday season the oakland dynamites, a team of nine year olds from the east bay, is headed to nationals in florida thanks to some generous donations that came flooding in from all around the community. ktvu bailey o'carroll joins us now with more on this story. bailey. hey, jenna. >> yeah, it's such a heartwarming story and it reminds you that there is still so much good that exists right here in the bay area. a young football team, now able to take another step toward turning their dreams into a reality thanks to the generosity of friends, family and, well, complete strangers. the oakland dynamites nine year old youth

football team qualified for nationals in florida, but until just days ago, they weren't sure if they'd be able to go because of financial reasons. but that all changed on wednesday when the team called real town business started a gofundme with just 110 bucks and then called ktvu to ask for help. and the money came rolling in quickly. >> i didn't think in our situation that we would pull it off that soon, that that fast. like that. you know, it was it was a good thing to see and, you know, i think they earned that more so than we're than we're just asking. i think the universe gave them back what they earned. >> their target goal was $10,000. at last check, they had raised over $25,000, including an anonymous donation for $2,000. the team is thankful to all, even complete strangers who donated to help them achieve their dreams on the national stage. >> we definitely want to say thank you and we appreciate it fully, you know, and we will definitely do right by everybody

who helped us and sent us out. you know, every penny is going to the boys and to their experience down there. >> so what's next? the team is going to book airbnbs, get their transportation figured out and hopefully get some activities planned for the young football players. they still have a while until they head off to naples, florida. the games start there on december 7th. the team of course, extremely excited to get that journey and they hope to represent the east bay well. all right, jenna, back to you. >> we're wishing them the best. did they say anything about how the kids are feeling right now that they're able to actually go and participate? >> we talked to one of their actually their starting quarterback who you saw there in that interview, and he just said he was so excited. and of course, they're so thankful to their friends and family and just community members who donated to help make this a reality. >> that's wonderful to see them go after their dreams, appreciate it. thank you so much, bailey in the newsroom tonight. and while the nine year old teams, the team of nine year

olds is set to go, there are still some others who need help trying to get there. make sure to head to our website at ktvu.com for links. there are several gofundme sites that are set up to support bay area teams that include the east bay warriors 12 year old's team and the menlo, atherton vikings ten year old team. >> new at ten tonight, a pastor at an east bay church confronted a burglar earlier this morning. antioch police say the pastor of the first family church responded to an alarm at the church on contra loma boulevard. the man apparently used an ax to break a window to enter the building. law enforcement says there was a scuffle, and the pastor was able to hold down the suspect until the police eventually arrived to take him into custody. the pastor, by the way, was not injured. >> the santa clara county sheriff's office says a stolen vehicle with four juveniles inside crashed in saratoga early this morning, killing one of the male passengers. deputies say they saw thelehyundai elantra in cupertino just after threen the morning. the driver

refused to stop and led them on a chase that ended in saratoga, where the driver crashed into a tree near saga, los gatos road and villa colina. the deined, but was detained not long after and the male passenger was pronounced dead at and two female passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. the driver could face a long list of charges, including vehicular manslaughter and possession of stolen property. >> and in piedmont today, the annual thanksgiving turkey trot paid tribute to three young adults killed in an accident yesterday. the victims were all piedmont high grads from the class of 2023, who were home from college to be with their families over the thanksgiving holiday. sponsors donated flowers for the runners to place at the crash memorial site along the way. the mayor addressed the tragedy that affects so many piedmont families. >> i went to bed last night thinking the words might come today for what to say. it turned

out there are no words that will bring these kids back to us. that will make this all okay. >> the turkey trot is a community wide event and a fundraiser for the piedmont high school track team. organizers decided to go on with the event with some changes, including rerouting the course so runners would not pass by the home of a victim or a victim's family. >> piedmont looking good. >> san jose state university issued a statement today saying that it is disappointed that boise state withdrew from the women's volleyball semifinal match amidst accusations that the san jose spartans are fielding a transgender player. the teams were scheduled to play tomorrow in las vegas in the mountain west conference semifinals. boise said in a statement, quote, they should not have to forgo this opportunity while waiting for a more thoughtful and better system that serves all athletes. boise state is one of five teams that have refused to play the spartans. san jose state said, quote, we celebrate and support

well, with thanksgiving just barely in the books, a number of families are already turning the page to another big holiday. >> yeah, why not? right. the hunt for the perfect tree was on tonight at a number of bay area christmas tree lots, and we sent our zac sos to one of those, one of the more popular ones in fact, in san francisco. and zach, was it busy? >> yeah, close. now they were nice enough to leave their lights on, but very busy. earlier. it's one of those places that perhaps you got your tree as a kid. perhaps even your parents got their tree here when they were kids. tonight that search for a tree beginning anew. it's your favorite one. >> i think so. >> for stephanie and j.w, the thanksgiving trek to clancy's

tree lot in san francisco's sunset. >> it's him on the ladder. >> an annual tradition. >> we do our thanksgiving lunch and then we go get a tree, bring it home, and spend the evening decorating the tree and having hot cocoa, guiding them in all things furs and frasier's stephen clancy. >> yes, i was just talking about that earlier. how the noble firs are really nice because they're full, but they still have just enough room, just enough for all those lights and ornaments, of course. >> but will it fit in the house? >> i think you're going to watch it go up and go woop! perfect. >> steve and a third generation christmas tree farmer who learned from the best. >> it's artwork. it's not just put a seed in the ground and let it grow. >> his father, who simply goes by clancy, heads up to their farm in oregon every few months, trimming them until they're just so just, you know, a little clipping here and there, a little bit just to make it even make it look better. >> and that's what makes for a nice tree. >> then once a year, the trees make their journey down to the

everything, but it looks like everything is up and it looks beautiful. >> did you put one on a news car? >> absolutely. >> weathered that storm. sorry. what's that? >> i said, did you pick one up? >> i'm one of those people that inevitably waits till the last minute. >> so you'll catch me? >> probably christmas eve racing to decorate. >> roger that. okay. >> thanks so much, zach. well, striking hotel workers in san francisco decided that they were going to celebrate thanksgiving, even if they had to do it on the picket lines. about 2500 workers have been on strike for more than two months now. they include housekeepers, servers, cooks, bartenders and others. and today they held a thanksgiving lunch on the sidewalk outside the westin saint francis hotel on geary street. workers for hilton and marriott are striking at six hotels in the city. they say their fellow workers are like their family. >> because we are here 24 over seven until the contract signed. it's very important we have to be strong. that's why we are all

here to celebrate thanksgiving. but also to show the boss that we are strong and we are together and we are not divided. >> the workers say that they are asking for affordable health care, pay increases and the reversal of covid era cuts. the hotels have said in previous statements that they are willing to bargain, and they claim that they have a history of offering competitive wages and benefits. >> a beautiful day across the bay area for this thanksgiving, and it really tight spread as far as our temperatures are concerned. a handful of high 50s in san francisco and then a good 50 miles inland towards livermore and antioch. but check out fairfield at 54 degrees. they were hampered by dense fog, so it was slow to clear and therefore the temperature reflected that 65. the outside number in morgan hill and in gilroy, as well as in san rafael. now, tonight, overnight should not be as cold as it was

when you woke up this morning. but still near freezing in santa rosa. some of these areas around there, like pine grove and rohnert park, should dip down to about that freezing point. 38 degrees in concord, clayton and crockett, 42 apiece, and redwood city and also redwood shores. we do have a frost advisory in effect again tonight. just kicked off at 10:00 and will continue until 9:00 tomorrow morning. and our inland areas, mainly north bay and also in the eastern portion of our bay area. then we have a dense fog advisory that is in effect right now all the way till 9:00 tomorrow morning from anywhere around the los banos area, all the way into bakersfield. clear skies right now, except we do have a few high clouds, 25,000ft, roughly to the north. we want to encourage those clouds because as we do so, they'll act like a blanket so it does not get as cold as it was early this morning. now, right now we're in the high 30s north of the golden gate bridge. 43

union city, and in fremont and 42 degrees around the tri valley. the winds are slight. we really could use a little bit of a breeze because that also mixes up the atmosphere so it doesn't get too cold, but the winds are flattening out. so we have a couple things going on. first of all, this area of low pressure to the north of us tossing in some clouds. also, this pesky area of low pressure to the south over the los angeles basin. mostly cloudy right now. some of these clouds are going to lift up into our area, and as they do so again, that helps us from not getting as cold. if they back off, well, it's going to be a frosty night for all of us. friday through sunday. we're talking about a cold start and then a mild finish. right now we have temperatures in the 20s around the greater lake tahoe area. average high this time of year is right around 46 degrees. a spectacular weekend in the offing. all right, here we go. tomorrow, your daytime high temperatures. very similar to today, if not even a couple of degrees warmer. and check this out. across the santa clara valley, temperatures at 70 by

new at ten tonight. at least five congressional democrats from connecticut say they received bomb threats today at their homes. one lawmaker, representative jahana hayes, says police told her they received an email saying a pipe bomb was in her home's mailbox. local police, state and u.s. capitol police were on high alert. local law enforcement officers found no evidence of explosives on the properties. fbi is now investigating. >> once again, congress is facing an end of the year deadline in washington to avoid

a government shutdown. funding for the federal government runs out on december 20th. republican house speaker mike johnson anticipates there won't be enough time left this year for congress to agree on a full spending deal, so a stopgap measure is most likely needed to avert a shutdown. >> i think that would be ultimately a good move because the country would benefit from it, because then you'd have republican control, and we have we'd have a little more say in what those those spending bills are. >> a temporary deal, however, would create yet another funding deadline early next year, and the timing would come just as the trump administration might be launching what is expected to be a packed agenda in its first 100 days. >> president elect trump and the president of mexico are offering a different perspective on their discussion wednesday over threatened u.s. tariffs. the mexican president, claudia sheinbaum, says today that she is confident that a tariff war with the united states can be

averted. trump said that he will hit mexican goods with a 25% tariff if mexico fails to stop illegal immigration and drugs. he claimed that mexico pledged to stop all unauthorized migration. but sheinbaum said today that the goal is to build bridges, not closed borders, and that the two talked about migrant caravans. >> president trump i raised all these issues with president trump and i told him that the caravan he mentioned in his publication, well, that caravan in reality is not going to reach the northern border because we have a strategy in place and it's being taken care of in our country. >> sheinbaum added that there will be other conversations before president trump takes office. >> still to come, one east bay woman who suffered the loss of a son is determined to keep her. long-time holiday trad n of

>> thanks for joining me for this special show called what's the good news? i'm claudine wong. we're showcasing inspiring stories of people across the bay area and highlighting good news. we've seen throughout the year. let's begin in the north bay with the girls flag football team that is working hard to keep up with demand. here's ktvu crystal bailey for the first time, the u.s. olympic games in 2028, in la will have women and men's flag football. >> and now it's a growing trend in bay area high schools office. army officer 3123 offense at san rafael high school. the demand was so high to create a girls flag football team. at the start of the school year, nearly 40 girls showed up to play. >> we started working with the district and administration so we can get the funding and just everything to form together, and then magically it happened at

the beginning of the year. don't let the ball get behind you, teacher and coach shannon mcclure tells us. >> local artists and businesses helped the new team get footballs, design the uniforms and supply the flags. >> everything is really been kind of an uphill battle for us as a team. we've had to fight for everything and really just work to get what we needed. >> like a team so dedicated they practiced in their halloween costumes since august, the girls have played 12 games around the bay area. >> we haven't won one yet, but every time we go out, we are better freshmen and seniors alike. >> the team is a family for the range of ages. >> i'd say we're pretty close. >> the bulldogs followed in the footsteps of the trailblazing terra linda trojans across town, who were the first in the school district to build out a girls team last year. their head coach says they grew from 14 players to 33 players this season. >> football isn't dumbed down

inside the general population facility in vacaville. nearly 4000 incarcerated men are serving sentences for a range of offenses under the watchful eye of officers from the california department of corrections and rehabilitation, hard missing your family, trying to get home. >> it's tough having a lovely wife and daughter that supports me and that needs me dearly, and having to be in here when you're incarcerated, you lose everything. >> but on this day, 16 men have found a new mindset. >> mentally you are free. you are a coach. >> inside the prison's gym. a transformation is underway. >> before we get started, i think it's best that we get you guys suited up. >> it's such an amazing experience to have people come in here and engage with us in this way gives us hope. >> when they got that jersey, you could see just the pride they had in receiving that. >> the group of incarcerated men picked out of a pool of applicants to participate in a first of its kind program in the united state
