again everyone. >> i'm frank mallicoat and i'm claudine wong. here's what we know. two young men and a woman were killed. one person was hurt in the crash. all of the victims graduated last year from piedmont high school. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. as ktvu betty yu reports, many in the community are still planning on attending a thanksgiving tradition tomorrow morning. >> people touched by the overnight tragedy that killed three piedmont high graduates and seriously injured another, stopped by the crash site to lay flowers, light candles and say a prayer on this thanksgiving eve, many who knew the victims who they believe were home from college for the holiday, were too overwhelmed with grief to speak on camera. >> i knew all of them, and just knowing them, even at an arm's length, is enough to know how bad this, how bad everyone feels. >> sidney proctor is a longtime resident and race director of the piedmont turkey trot. more

than 2400 people are expected to participate in the thanksgiving tradition that she chose not to cancel in light of the tragedy. >> we are a really tight knit community. it's very hard when you have a loss like this of such young, bright lives, and i think that creating a space in a town like this is key to processing grief. and so we it's a little more somber here today at the bib pickup. it's probably going to be a little more somber tomorrow. >> at the race, proctor said the group made the decision to modify the race course to ensure runners would not pass by the home of a victim or a victim's family member. two sponsors, including the oakland flour market, donated 1500 flowers so runners can take a moment to place them at the memorial site, located about 100ft from the course. chris sestero, who owns bodyfit training in rockridge, is a first time sponsor.

dealing with. this morning, the day before thanksgiving. >> officials say the crash site is not in an area known for accidents. the police chief says that speed was likely a contributing factor in the crash. >> and now we go to the south bay, where another family will spend thanksgiving without a family member due to a devastating crash as well. a sophomore at a santa clara university h while crossing the street last sd at el camino reaan mallicoat way, just across the street from campus. ktvu is amber lee spoke to the victim's father, who says his son was on his way to class when he was killed. >> he has to cross three times a day, you know, and each way, nathan pope is struggling to make sense of how his son cephas was killed in front of their apartment building in santa clara. >> he was crossing the street to attend class at santa clara university, where he was a sophomore. >> my whole body is just kind of

numb, you know, i'm it's very hard to it's very hard to describe how i feel now. >> around noon last thursday, pope says cephas was walking his bicycle across busy el camino real and stopped at the median to wait for oncoming traffic to pass. dad says the driver in this dark colored bmw was likely speeding when he crashed into a tree. the impact sent the tree airborne and it struck kayfus in the head. pope says his son was wearing a helmet, but the 18 year old was pronounced dead at the hospital. >> i just feel like my heart was ripped out. >> rebecca pope cephus aunt, rushed to the scene. she says the family celebrating the holidays without her nephew will be difficult. >> it's horrible. i wouldn't wish this on anyone. >> the family is calling on the city of santa clara to make traffic safety improvements, including lowering the speed limit from 35 to 25mph and creating some sort of walkway for the many students in the area. dad tells me cephas was

>> new at 11. the san jose city council will be taking steps next week to replace former council member omar torres. last week, the council voted to hold a special election to fill the district three vacancy, along with appointing an interim member who would serve until the election is held. the council now says it will finalize the timeline for both the election and the appointment process. next tuesday. torres resigned earlier this month. he has been charged with raping a family member, 25 years ago. >> the back and forth continues in san mateo county after sheriff christina corpus refusal to step down from her post. she's accused of retaliating against employees having an improper work, romance and using racial and homophobic slurs. corpus denies any wrongdoing, and in a letter released yesterday, she described the effort to remove her from office as politically motivated. well, tonight the union representing sheriff's deputies responding with their own letter calling sheriff corpus actions, quote, a

glaring display of contempt for her community. that letter goes on to read, quote, resign now for the sake of the department. the community and the integrity of the office, you once swore to uphold, we will no longer work with you. that ship has sailed. all you're doing is playing the role of victim with a disaster of your own making. quit. we reached out to sheriff corpus for her response. as of this report tonight, we have not heard back. >> san francisco police have arrested a man they say shot a pregnant woman. this happened last tuesday near hollister avenue in the bayview. police say the victim was arguing with a man who then shot her and then took off. the suspect, khyree robertson, was arrested two days later in daly city and booked on two counts of attempted homicide. we do not have an update on the woman's condition and her relationship to the suspect is still unclear. an update now on a vandalism attack at the urban alchemy nonprofit. san francisco police now say they are investigating graffiti of a swastika on their building

on market street as a possible hate crime. the safety ambassador group released a surveillance video of the incident that happened early monday. so far, no arrests have been made. >> san francisco is planning a controversial cut to the number of days homeless families can stay in shelters. under current rules, families can extend extend a 90 day temporary placement in a shelter by up to an additional three months, according to the new rules, which go into effect december the 10th. families will only be allowed to stay in their shelter for 90 days total unless they meet more strict requirements for a 30 day extension. the city's department of homelessness and supportive housing says that change is intended to make the system more efficient. critics say the change will push families back onto the street. >> governor gavin newsom grants more than a dozen inmates clemency. the podcaster, who will now be home for the holidays and billboard is

today, the airport has seen 24 delays, no cancellations. the airport said it's expected to see up to 2.5 million travelers between november. the 16th and today. that's 91% of pre-pandemic levels. and look at that highway. >> yeah, that'll take you a while. let's take you out to san francisco international airport now, where it has been a busy couple of days. according to flightaware, there have been eight cancellations at that airport in the last 24 hours. we saw a much bigger problem earlier this week, so that's pretty good. only a handful of delays there and shoppers across the bay area are already out taking advantage of deals before black friday sales begin. the national retail federation says over 131 million people are planning to shop this holiday weekend. >> ktvu reporter lamonica peters finds out what some shoppers in the bay area are putting in their carts. >> clothes on, shoes, purses. like anything that i know my family is going to like. >> holiday shopping is in full

temperatures and you know 32 degrees in santa rosa. that'll get you to 32, 31 degrees out in forestville or forest. yeah. forestville. frost advisory. that will probably be. that's tomorrow morning and then probably again on friday morning. and then we have the dense fog advisory that will be in effect a couple of mornings, a couple of days probably actually beyond that because the high is going to stay a while. so the valley fog is going to be like a feedback loop. it just gets more pronounced each day until we get a weather system in here. and we could. the models suggest that we could easily have a good five seven day run of no, you know, atmospheric change and maybe even beyond that. so that fog will have a chance to ramp up lake tahoe. overnight lows in the teens and then the forecast is money, right? daytime highs in the mid upper 40s. low 50s. perfect weather for the holiday season. and perfect that we got the rain when we did because this high is going to dominate for a number of days at least three or 4 or 5. but some of the models go beyond that. so it looks like it's a fairly semi-permanent addition for a while, and that will facilitate that valley fog. just kind of, you know, how it
