>> this is ktvu fox two news at noon. >> good afternoon. i'm gasia mikaelian. we'll start in piedmont, where three young people are dead and another is seriously injured after the tesla cybertruck they were in ran off the road and caught fire. ktvu has confirmed the victims are all piedmont high school graduates from the class of 2023. our amanda quintana has details for us a mangled, burnt tesla cybertruck stuck between a wall and a tree in this quiet piedmont neighborhood. >> that's what was left after a devastating crash that took three young lives early wednesday morning. >> this is just a tragic loss of life, you know, again, we don't know the cause of the collision. and during this holiday season, it's just our hearts go out to the families that inevitably are going to have to deal with this tragedy. >> just after 3 a.m, an iphone inside the cybertruck alerted police that it had crashed. it quickly caught fire and was engulfed by the time police

arrived just two minutes later, firefighters had to put it out. >> yeah. when we arrived, the flames were about twice the height of the car. >> it's unclear what caused the car to go off the road or catch fire. chp is still investigating that. when our crew arrived, we saw a young man in the back of an ambulance. but not hurt. two people came up who seemed to be his parents. they hugged and it was an emotional moment. we now know he was following the cybertruck when it crashed, and he was able to pull a man out of the front passenger seat. that man is the only survivor sent to the hospital with serious injuries. sources have confirmed to ktvu that all four people in the cybertruck were 2023 piedmont high school graduates, which means they're all around 18 years old. police believe all of them, as well as the man who helped rescue a passenger, were all leaving the same gathering. >> you know, our women and men who responded to this call did everything they could and it's devastating. but again, the devastation pales in comparison

to what these families are dealing with this morning in piedmont. >> amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> nearly 3 million people are expected to fly today, one of the busiest travel days of the thanksgiving holiday. snow and rain, though, could impact flights nationwide. kelly saberi has more from chicago. >> it's one of the busiest travel days of the year. wednesday, as millions of americans are getting out of town for thanksgiving. on tuesday, the tsa screening more than 2.6 million people at checkpoints across the country, and that number is expected to go up despite a 4% increase in airfare. >> my round trip flight for thanksgiving was like more than double my christmas round trip flight. >> but storms making their way through the west are drawing major concerns, and more wet weather is expected in the eastern u.s. later this week. still, airlines say they're prepared. >> we've been practicing deicing for, you know, three months. we had a great practice run with

the snowstorm last week, so we're ready to go. >> travelers are urged to get to the airport two hours early for domestic flights and three hours early for international ones. and even if you have tsa precheck, don't expect the wait time to be that much faster. there are now more than 20 million travelers enrolled in the program, up almost 3 million from a year ago. >> it doesn't look too bad right now, but it's very early. i can see that it's going to get worse and worse, probably as the day goes on. >> meanwhile, nearly 72 million americans will be hitting the road this thanksgiving. a bright spot there. gas prices are down almost $0.20 per gallon from last year. airlines are facing a lot of pressure this holiday as they continue to face staffing shortages and air traffic control issues. in chicago, kelly saberi, ktvu, fox two news. >> a live look now at san francisco international airport. blue skies up above. no rain today, but the holiday rush is expected to intensify from here on out. flightaware is reporting

101 delays and five cancellations at sfo across the bay at the oakland airport. 12 flights are delayed. none canceled. at last check down in san jose. 24 delays to report there in the middle of this very busy travel day. airport workers are rallying at oakland international demanding better pay and benefits. rallies just getting underway at noon here. a live picture for you from outside the terminal. the workers are the ones who cleaned the planes, handled baggage, assist wheelchair passengers, and help maintain overall safety operations at the airport. they're calling on the port of oakland to raise the minimum standards for all contracted workers. they say they make less than $20 an hour, and they have to pay for out of pocket for much of their health benefits. we did reach out to port officials for a response. they say they hear the workers concerns and that the issue is between the airlines and their contracted employees. they also say they're taking precautions to help ensure that airport operations remain uninterrupted for all those holiday travelers. meanwhile, the chp maximum enforcement period starts tonight at six. officers will be out looking for drunk and distracted drivers, as well as

those who are speeding during last year's thanksgiving enforcement period, officers arrested more than 1000 people and investigated 27 deadly crashes. the enforcement period ends at 1159 sunday night. well, the bay area's newest costco store opened this morning to crowds. a ribbon cutting and more than a little bit of chaos. hundreds of people waited in long lines before the doors opened. some people drove halfway across the state to be there. our allie rasmus explains what they were looking for, and if they thought all that fanfare was worth it. we're not going t. >> five hours before the doors opened at the new costco on johnson drive in pleasanton, managers tried to keep eager shoppers calm. a line of more than 500 people circled around the building. most of the early birds here were on the hunt for some high end bottles of alcohol. >> every costco, when they open for the first time, they have rare stuff that aren't at other costco's. and so for this one, i was here for the bourbon. >> honestly, it's different years and there's certain ones that are really valuable so you can buy it for a couple hundred and resell it for thousands.

>> jared franchino drove here from fresno to pick up a bottle of ofc. the price tag on this $2,000. >> it's good juice. i'm from kentucky. you can't find this stuff like 15 minutes away from where they make it. but i'm here. i've been here for a year now. costco is only open very much, and i thought, why not come so it paid off. they only had like three of those, so i'm glad i came. >> i also hope that we're able to use the revenues to plow back into the community, you know, provide amenities and services and obviously strengthen our budget. >> pleasanton's new mayor elect says opening this costco in town was a nearly decade long process that involved getting voters and the city council on board to support an economic development initiative. several years ago, according to documents posted online by the pleasanton city council. they estimate the sales tax from costco revenues alone could top 1.7 million per year, but not everyone here is buying alcohol. this grandmother was on a quest for pokemon cards. >> it's a christmas gift for all my grandkids, so i get tons of

of the year. fares for bart will increase 5.5% on january 1st. the transit agency says the new year's day increase will help bart keep pace with inflation. pay for continued operations and work toward restoring financial stability. the average fare will go up by $0.25. a similar bart fare increase went into effect january first of this year. well, work continues under sunny skies to clear debris down by the atmospheric river as ktvu jana katsuyama reports, tree trimming companies are slammed.

>> reporter it's the sound of the season after last week's massive storms. arborists and tree trimming companies are taking advantage of these clear skies. >> we're just trying to get ahead of the curve and get get this ready, because this is right on a busy street here. and you know and don't want any dead trees or dangerous trees around. >> james carnes with small world tree company says the heavy rain and winds were an early reminder for homeowners to do critical checks before the next storm hits. >> this is a dead tree we're doing today with sudden oak death. the leaves will turn brown overnight, basically, oak is very strong normally, but when it has this disease, it the whole thing can just snap and fall. >> that's exactly what happened last friday during the storm when a giant oak snapped in half. according to arborist alex lamas. >> it fell into the building. it punched a hole right through the garage roof. so it was a little scary. had just snapped like halfway up the tree. >> the weight of water causing much of this storm's damage.

>> what was unusual about this storm was that it happened early in the year, while the deciduous trees still had their canopy on them, so the extra leaves caught more water had more weight, and the trees that are deciduous aren't really designed to hold all that extra weight. >> tad jacobs is founder of tree masters and says some species are particularly vulnerable. >> redwoods and acacias are very common to lose limbs. cypress as well. >> in marin city tuesday, his team was taking down a giant eucalyptus about 120 years old that had grown so large it was causing concern that it might fall in a storm. jacobs says it's important for all homeowners to watch for danger signs. >> you want to check the trunk for any cracks in the trunk or things like that, where you see light coming through the trunk is another telltale sign. >> jacobs says one other tip for homeowners is to go outside, look up at the tree's canopy, and if you can't see the sky, that's a good indication that it might need some thinning. so you should call an arborist. reporting from oakland, jana katsuyama, ktvu, fox two news.

>> let's get outside here in this gorgeous weather, maybe do some cleanup work around the house, or maybe a pre-thanksgiving stroll. what do you say, mark? >> yeah, i think maybe we could fit both those activities into gasia this afternoon. yeah, the weather agrees with your plans. lots of sunshine out there after a chilly start. it's actually nice afternoon across most of the bay area, so, yeah, we get a break from the rainfall and we definitely need that break. but definitely want to bundle up. take a look at these overnight lows from today. some 30s across parts of the bay area. and the coolest locations tomorrow actually. in fact by friday could be back down into the upper 20s. so as a result, we are talking about frost advisories already prepped by the national weather service for tomorrow morning and then extended once again into friday morning. so this in place for portions of the north bay and then the inland east bay as well. temperatures dropping off into the upper 20s to the low 30s for those two days, and a little bit of a bump in the numbers expected into the weekend. of course, a busy travel day today. you can see the radar coverage and a lot of snow coverage out toward portions of colorado. and here's the rain band. as you can see,

right around the saint louis approaching chicago this afternoon. so it's just tracking kind of those two areas of snowfall and that rain band. here's the satellite today back across the west, and some scattered high clouds down in southern california. but those high clouds right now moving on out into portions of arizona and southern nevada and here in the bay area, if you've been outside it is bright sunshine, mostly clear conditions. we will have to keep an eye on some of this fog, though. in the central valley right now, it's really close to fresno. but some of that that fog could be a factor somewhat over the next few mornings as we've had a lot of moisture out there. it's a stable pattern and light winds, and that could lead to some overnight fog that could impact your visibilities. but no fog in this live picture right now. looking out toward the golden gate bridge. lots of sunshine, a beautiful day around the bay, and temperatures right now. after that cool start, a nice recovery this afternoon for lunchtime. santa rosa 57, concord is 60 and san jose right now in the lower 60s. 61 degrees. so the rainfall is over. we were tracking this this pattern yesterday, producing some rain showers in central and

>> for those in a giving mood, you can just drive by and drop one off. it's a way to make sure that everyone has a warm meal to be thankful for. on thursday in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu fox two news. >> meanwhile, a friendly annual thanksgiving competition is underway right now. salvation army central kitchen in san francisco mayor london breed and the police and fire chiefs are competing to see who can carve the most turkey. it's a tradition that's been going on now for more than 50 years. this is what we saw in last year's competition. the mayor and chiefs, along with police officers and firefighters, carving more than 600 pounds of turkey that will be served to almost 500 senior citizens and unhoused people living in the tenderloin. volunteers will be on hand tomorrow to help serve and distribute the holiday meals. cracking down on retail crime as the holiday shopping season kicks off into full gear. how the chp will play a vital role in this year's holiday shopping season. also giving nonviolent offenders a second chance during the holidays. the program that's relaunching in santa clara county and the

hours. four people in all were in a tesla cybertruck that crashed and caught fire around 3 a.m. at hampton road and king avenue. one person was pulled from the burning car by a witness and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. ktvu has confirmed they are all 2023 graduates of piedmont high school. reportedly home from college for the thanksgiving holiday. police say they think speed was a factor in this crash. >> this is just a tragic loss of life. you know, again, we don't know the cause of the collision and during this holiday season, it's just our hearts go out to the families that inevitably are going to have to deal with this tragedy. >> it's unclear what caused the car to go off the road or catch fire. the chp has taken up that part of the investigation. meanwhile, one person died on an east bay freeway after getting hit by a vehicle earlier this morning. this happened on southbound 680 near crow canyon road in san ramon. the highway patrol said it received a call about a pedestrian who ran onto the roadway at around 4:40 a.m,

the two far right lanes were closed for a while and reopened a couple of hours later. the chp is investigating why that person was on the freeway. the holiday travel rush is in full swing. another live look here at san francisco international airport. no cause for weather delays after all that intense rain we had all last week. still, more than 2 million people are expected to pass through the airports, and even more that sunday after thanksgiving. that's the big return home day. our betty yu has more. after talking with travelers who say it's been a pretty smooth experience for them, so far, this thanksgiving record travel is expected on highways and at airports across the bay area. >> my plan is to go to san diego, visit some friends and possibly la and stop off at legoland. i love legoland. >> lonnie dixon owns both gas and electric cars, but he's choosing to drive his tesla this holiday. >> save gas in my car, so i like to take it for a long drive because reliable. and on top of that, i think it's more safer and faster than going on the airlines and less expensive.

>> gas prices are lower this thanksgiving season compared to last year. triple a expects to see 1.7 million more people on the roads this holiday, compared to 2023. the chp will begin maximum enforcement wednesday at 6 p.m. through sunday. >> plan to hit some delays. give yourself extra time to get where you're going if you get there early, great, but just have patience. make sure that your vehicle is travel ready, especially if you're making a long drive. >> wednesday is expected to be the busiest day to pick up rental cars after flying in from the east coast tuesday. henry allen didn't have to deal with any wait times. >> it's been very smooth, incredibly smooth. we had a great flight, unbelievable landing and got our bags in record time. so no complaints. >> there were only a handful of delays reported at sfo tuesday, though in the evening every domestic flight was on time out of terminal three. >> we were anticipating a lot more. that's why we're here early. that united club, kent kent is waiting for us right

now. >> the airport is expecting big crowds here on wednesday, particularly in the earlier part of the day. so it's advising travelers to leave extra time at sfo. betty yu, ktvu, fox two news more and more travelers are taking trains this holiday season. >> last thanksgiving, amtrak saw a 16% increase in ridership from the year before. amtrak says it's expecting another increase this year. >> a resurgence in train travel. i think across the board, people, more and more people are taking the train and noticing the train as a viable transportation option. and last year, we saw a million customers taking the train during thanksgiving. and every single year we meet new right like records and ridership. so we're excited to see jump this year. >> last year, more than 1 million people rode amtrak during the thanksgiving holiday travel period. amtrak says it's on track to set a new all time record ridership. this year. three american citizens imprisoned for years by china have been released and are returning to the united states. it's part of a diplomatic agreement with beijing and the

final months of the biden administration. the three are mark sweden, kai lee and john long, all of whom have been designated by the u.s. government as wrongfully detained by china. sweden had been facing a death sentence on drug charges. lee and liang were imprisoned on espionage charges. the associated press reported in january. lee's son, harrison lee, is a stanford university doctoral student. santa clara county is restarting a program that allows people with nonviolent misdemeanor warrants to avoid jail time in the month of december. it's called operation second chance, and if people turn themselves in, they'll receive a new court date rather than being booked into county jail. ktvu south bay reporter lamonica peters has more about the program. as long as they can see their families for the holidays. >> it beats being locked up in the long run. >> from december 1st to december 31st, anyone with a nonviolent misdemeanor warrant in santa clara county can avoid being booked in jail through operation second chance. the program first ran from 2007 to 2017, and more

than 3500 people resolved their warrant without jail time. >> this is a chance around the holidays to allow people to not stress out if they have a warrant, get back into the court system, get that taken care of and it's being rolled out throughout all of our law enforcement agencies in santa clara county. this is a true collaboration brooks jarocz with the santa clara county sheriff's office says operation second chance was initially halted because of staffing issues. >> but now, once again, they want to reduce overcrowding by keeping people out of jail for nonviolent misdemeanors, especially during the holidays. >> typically, what happens is if they have an outstanding warrant, if you get pulled over for a speeding violation or something, you're going to be brought to our jail, and chances are you're going to have to wait there for some time, possibly in a holding cell, before you can make bail and be released. >> darrow says the program is returning because it's worked in

multi-state shoplifting ring. law enforcement officials say they stole $2 million worth of cosmetics, clothes, perfumes and other beauty products from well-known stores, then resold the stolen items in new york city and the dominican republic. >> the alleged retail theft ring specifically targeted ulta beauty, sephora, macy's, american eagle and other well well known retailers. every time you buy products that you don't know where they are coming from, there is a danger to you. you don't know where these products are from. sephora would steal them. >> those under arrest are facing multiple charges, including felony possession of stolen property and conspiracy. the owner of a tattoo shop in oakland says someone made off with more than $10,000 worth of equipment during a break in. the owner of sacred tattoo in uptown oakland. excuse me, old oakland shared surveillance video showing a man rolling the tattoo store's cart right down the sidewalk had needles, ink and other equipment inside. he says even worse, the thief stole his

and the sheriff's sergeants union. this all comes after a 400 page report accused the sheriff of retaliating against employees having an improper work romance, and of using racial and homophobic slurs. sheriff corpus denies any wrongdoing and says the effort to remove her is politically motivated. a judge overseeing the antitrust case against google in washington will now will not delay the case to allow the incoming trump administration time to review it. the department of justice called for google to sell its chrome browser after a court ruled that the company has been violating monopoly laws. the trial is set for april. the judge found in august that google broke antitrust laws to support its search engine. visa is cutting close to 200 jobs in the bay area. state filings show. visa is laying off workers in foster city and san francisco. some of the positions include management and engineers. visa announced plans to lay off some 1400 employees and contractors by the end of the year, as part of an effort to streamline operations. well, from the dinner table straight to your favorite retailer. the black friday shopping tradition

thanksgiving, will still be one of the most popular days to shop this year. the federation forecast more than 180 million people will shop in stores and online this thanksgiving weekend. the majority is expected to shop in person. the national retail federation says shoppers are budgeting more than $900 each, on average for gifts this holiday. that is 27 more than last year's average. >> i'd say i'm splurging a little bit. just graduated high school, so i got a little bit extra cash. >> i do definitely try to stick to that budget and keep some. keep a budget in mind for each family member. >> i'm flying home to see my family, so i always want to come bearing gifts. but of course everything is super expensive, so not everyone's going to be getting a gift this year. >> when it comes to saving money, retail experts say store loyalty programs are an effective way to save costs. california health officials are worried about the state's low vaccination rates. as we head into the heart of the holiday season. according to the state department of health, less less than 10% of californians have received an updated covid

vaccine, and flu vaccination rates are similarly low. the number of new rsv and flu cases is on the rise. covid test positivity, hospitalizations and deaths, though, remain low statewide and most of the country. now to a case that pits the rights of the homeless against public health and safety. santa clara county's main water provider approved an ordinance that makes it a crime to live by creeks and rivers that provide water and flood control to the region. ktvu south bay reporter mark sayer has the story. >> valley water owns and controls more than 300 miles of waterways in santa clara county. many of those start or end in reservoirs are used to resupply groundwater basins, or are part of the region's flood control plan. but in many areas, including here along the guadalupe river, there are dozens of tents and people living right next to the waterways. >> encampments have significantly impacted our ability to work in the creeks and to steward the environment and preserve flood protection for communities. valley water invested billions of taxpayer and ratepayer dollars for flood

protection and water infrastructure that has been damaged by the impacts of encampments. >> before the ordinance was approved, employee groups told stories about being harassed, chased and being threatened with violence as they went about their jobs. some residents expressed concerns about noise and fires and sanitation, but homeless advocates say any ordinance that criminalizes being unhoused is simply not the right approach. >> that was the first thing that we said was that you can't make homelessness illegal and you can't come in with a cudgel, and that's exactly what they're doing. and that is our fear. >> and all it takes is for somebody to see the person. >> deborah townley addressed the board. she spent five years living in her car and says if such an ordinance had been in place, it would have just made things worse for me personally, i wouldn't have had the money to pay the fine. >> i would have had to leave my disabled son in a parked car somewhere, or at a shelter where he wasn't safe. he has epilepsy. i wouldn't have been able to pay the fine, so then i would end up

in jail. >> the ordinance has been months in the making with a vote initially postponed so the water district could hold an outreach meeting with the unhoused and their advocates. some also want to see more alternative options for the unhoused in the community before any enforcement action begins. >> so when you're pushing people out, you're pushing them into nothing. you're pushing them into death. >> the last thing i want to see is criminalization versus compliance. i don't want to see many more people of color incarcerated. yes, the vast majority of unhoused people are people of color. >> the new ordinance takes effect at the end of this year and beginning next year. valley water says it will begin doing immediate outreach to those living in affected waterways. reporting in san jose i'm mark sayer, ktvu, fox two news. >> an oakland youth football team has seen an incredible community response to its call for financial help. after qualifying for the national championship game in florida next month. the oakland dynamites are tb, which stands for real town business, a game a team of nine year olds opened up

jackets at home if you want to. just get outside. we have a nice forecast for you over the next few days in this dry weather stretch. it will continue right on through the weekend. so of course, you know, we've had all the rainfall last week. too much rain bomb cyclones and atmospheric rivers. thankfully we have the break we have right now. you can see the satellite and actually the forecast with with cloud cover and rainfall, it remains dry into the weekend here. this is friday afternoon as we take this into your saturday. this is saturday 12:00 pm. just a few high clouds drifting into the bay area, but it is dry into the weekend and possibly into early next week. but what is happening? we have some cold air, wants to move in and a frost advisory in place tomorrow morning and then once again friday morning. so a bit of a chill in the air. and that frost advisory for portions of the north bay and the inland east bay as well. first thing tomorrow morning. of course, today is a very busy travel day. and as you can see here, the snow coverage moving out of colorado. this was from earlier today. and then some rain showers kind of focused around saint louis approaching the chicago area as well. back here we do have this. we have mostly

clear skies. the cloud cover from yesterday kind of moved on out to the south and to the east. it was over southern california. this morning, but clearing skies for a good portion of the bay area. we'll have to keep an eye on some patchy valley fog. that could be somewhat of a factor over the next few mornings. right now, it's kind of a centered closer to the fresno area outside right now. here's our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge and no rain clouds to speak of. a beautiful afternoon, a great chance to get outside, and you can see some 50s in santa rosa right now. concord, 60 degrees and san jose right now in the lower 60s. so the rainfall is over. we started out the week with some rain clouds, but this system is going to move on out to the east, and we just have lots of sunshine and a dry weather pattern. wants to settle in. over the next few days we'll be watching out though for some areas of fog first thing, at least in the morning hours. so it's a dry pattern. thursday friday, saturday and sunday might be able to tack on a few more days to that forecast as well as dry weather. stretch will continue in the sierra. this translates to a nice quiet weather pattern in the mountains as well. you
