8:37 am
trump made during the campaign. and i think there are a lot of americans that are eager for something that changes things in terms of the way that the economy has gone. many of them are concerned about jobs losing their jobs, and many of these jobs have gone to mexico to china, elsewhere. so that's a big, big issue. but another big issue is also inflation or has been inflation in the last few years. and that was another big promise that donald trump made during the campaign. and the issue with tariffs is that we may have conflicting results or conflicting goals in both inflation and the generation of jobs in the us. >> yeah, i mean, i studied economics. so you think about some people may think, oh, this is great. this could help companies, us companies because consumers will then turn to those products. but considering the impact on supply and demand, what do you think about the possibility that this could actually drive up prices for us products as well? and the possibility that china, mexico and canada will retaliate by imposing tariffs on our exports?
8:38 am
>> well, that's a real possibility. i think one of the issues, you know, there's, as you point out, there's a body of research. this is this is not unknown to economists, a body of research that points to the effects of tariffs. and what we see is that often maybe in the short run, companies can absorb some of these additional costs. but in the long run, consumers end up paying the cost. and here we mean consumers in the us when the us government would adopt those tariffs. so we may see maybe in the short run, some relief for companies. and industries, let's say steel or others that have been floated as companies that would see some tariffs. but in the long run, what more likely than not, what we will see is that the consumer will end up paying the price and that prices will go up as a result, affecting inflation. so it's really something that even though we may see a positive effect in the short run for some
8:39 am
industries, and that might consumers might not feel the pinch right away in the long run. this is likely to be detrimental to the us consumer and those industries as well. >> we're looking at in particular the car industry. some of the big us carmakers are down this morning. their stocks are down this morning on wall street on this news. what do you think is the likelihood that this that these tariffs will actually be able to be enforced and enacted. >> that's a great question. there's a lot of speculation as to whether the tariffs at this point are a negotiating tactic that the trump administration is using or has used. you know, we've seen this during the first administration, whether president trump would leverage this tactic. again, it was effective in renegotiating what was nafta at the time that became the us-mexico-canada agreement. and that agreement is due for a renegotiation or reevaluation in 2026, and negotiations will start shortly, probably next year. and this is
8:40 am
a big concern for mexico. for canada, you were suggesting, you know, reactions of coming from these countries that might engage in a trade war. if the us adopts tariffs, they might do the same. and this will be a lose lose situation for consumers in north america. this is something that certainly the us would want to avoid. and what would be important to see is if this indeed helps the trump administration gain concessions that are favorable to the us, to bring to generate more employment and to keep a lid on inflation and really quick, maybe just quickly before you go, what do you think? >> i mean, the president elect has said this is to stop the flow of drugs and immigrants into the country. what what is your take on whether or not this would be successful in actually the tariffs could be successful in making that happen and stopping that from happening. >> i think we saw during the first trump administration that this, you know, some people
8:41 am
might call it the weaponization of trade to of trade to influence other spheres like immigration or drug trafficking. that was somewhat successful in that it compelled mexico to tighten its southern border and make it harder for migrants coming from central and south america to reach the united states. so that was successful to some extent. i don't think it will be. it'll end this undocumented migration into the us entirely. if the mexican government could, it probably already would have done it. and the same is true for fentanyl and other drugs. but it will help negotiate these different dimensions. and hopefully this will also provide some relief in terms of these issues that many, many voters, many people that voted for donald trump, had as top concerns. >> all right. certainly very interesting. the discussions will continue. cornell professor gustavo flores macias, thank you
