When I think about the school year, there’s always one event that stands out among the rest: Lighting of the Quads. While some might count down the days until the end of the semester for the relief of finishing classes, I eagerly await this special Hopkins tradition that brings students together in a magical way.
Lighting of the Quads, or LOTQ for short, is exactly what its name suggests: a night where Keyser Quad is adorned with string lights and fireworks, creating a festive and celebratory atmosphere. The excitement builds as students gather, waiting for the countdown that illuminates the quad from Gilman Hall to the Milton S. Eisenhower Library. But the magic of LOTQ isn’t confined to the lights alone. In the weeks leading up to the event, students are encouraged to submit design ideas for promotional materials and giveaways. It’s always exciting to see the creative designs, and I make it a point to arrive right on time to snag one of the mugs to add to my growing collection.
A few hours before the fireworks show, the quad buzzes with activity. Student groups put on captivating performances, and a variety of tables—set up by different organizations and departments—offer food, activities, and free goodies. It’s hard to miss the Johns Hopkins Entertainers Club with their jaw-dropping, fire-spinning performance. I love wandering from booth to booth, all while sipping on a cup of hot chocolate. There are games, crafts, and interactive light shows presented by the Makerspace. You can walk away with anything from holographic stickers, courtesy of the Alumni Association, to reusable totes from the Office of Sustainability.
The event is a refreshing break from the routine of classes and studying, offering a chance to relax and have fun with friends. Standing amidst the crowd, surrounded by so many fellow students, is a powerful reminder of the vibrant community at Hopkins. It’s a moment that truly brings people together and is a cherished tradition. As a senior, I look forward to experiencing LOTQ with the same friends I’ve shared this tradition with since our first year. I can’t wait to see the lights that mark the end of another successful fall semester and the start of the holiday season.
