Chocolate chili cookies are the perfect blend of sweet and spicy. There is “sweet and salty” and then there is “sweet and spicy” and I’m on board with both!
The combination of chocolate and ground chili peppers is a dynamic duo in your mouth, without being excessively spicy.

What you will love about chocolate chili cookies
Chocolate chili cookies are what it sounds like. They are spicy chocolate cookies with a hint of cinnamon. If you have ever had cayenne chocolate before, you know what I’m talking about. It’s the rich and luscious chocolate flavor combined with a little smack of spice.
You are going to love how fun these cookies turn out to be!
Another name that these cookies go by is “Mexican hot chocolate cookies”. The cayenne pepper powder in combination with the cinnamon really give it the Mexican flare we are going for.
Ingredients
Besides the basic ingredients for chocolate cookies, we are also going to be adding cinnamon and cayenne pepper powder.
Did you know that spicy foods can be good for your gut? According to quite a few studies, and this particular one from Salsbury University, spicy food can cause a release of endorphins in your brain that make you feel happy! Evidence suggests that spicy food may also increase metabolism, reduce inflammation, and it might even trick your brain into feeling fuller longer.
If you need a reason to add some spiciness to your food, those are pretty good ones! And what better way to add something spicy to your life, than with a rich and gooey chocolate cookie.
These are the ingredients for chocolate chili cookies:

How to make spicy chocolate chili cookies
Preheat the oven to 350°F. In the mixing bowl of a kitchen stand mixer with the paddle attachment, add the room temperature butter and sugar and cream then together until fluffy.
Beat in the eggs, one at a time then add the vanilla extract.
Sift the flour, baking soda, cocoa powder, salt, cayenne pepper powder and cinnamon together. While the mixer is on low, slowly add the dry ingredients until it is all incorporated. Fold in the semi-sweet chocolate chips with a spatula.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spoon the dough onto the sheet, leaving several inches between each cookie.
Bake it in the oven for 9-11 minutes. Transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to cool.
Serve and enjoy!
Variations
These chocolate chili cookies go well with a little bit of chopped up walnuts. Fold ⅓ of a cup of chopped walnuts into the cookie batter whenever you fold the chocolate chips into it, then bake according to the directions.
Serving suggestions
If you want something a little extra for garnish, I recommend sprinkling a little flaky sea salt on top and drizzling some Mexican cajeta (a sweetened milk reduction that almost tastes like caramel) over the cookies.
