We report the detection of weak gravitational lensing of faint, distant background galaxies by the rich, X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies MS 1054-03 at z = 0.83. This is the first measurement of weak lensing by a bona fide cluster at such a high redshift. We detect tangential shear at the 5%-10% level over a range of radii 50'' ≲ r ≲ 250'' centered on the optical position of the cluster. Two-dimensional mass reconstruction using galaxies with 21.5 < I < 25.5 shows a strong peak which…

Weak Lensing by Two z ~ 0.8 Clusters of Galaxies

We report the detection of weak gravitational lensing of distant background galaxies by two rich, X-ray-luminous clusters of galaxies, MS 1137+66 at z=0.783 and RXJ 1716+67 at z = 0.813. We detect a

Hubble Space Telescope Weak-Lensing Study of the z=0.83 Cluster MS 1054–03

We have measured the weak gravitational lensing of faint, distant background galaxies by MS 1054-03, a rich and X-ray luminous cluster of galaxies at a redshift of z = 0.83, using a two-color mosaic

Weak Gravitational Lensing by a Sample of X-Ray Luminous Clusters of Galaxies. I. The Data Set

We present weak gravitational lensing mass measurements of a sample of 38 highly X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies with well-defined selection criteria. The clusters were observed with either

Weak Lensing Analysis of Cl 1358+62 Using Hubble Space Telescope Observations

We report on the detection of weak gravitational lensing of faint, distant background objects by Cl 1358+62, a rich cluster of galaxies at a redshift of z = 0.33. The observations consist of a large,

Weak Lensing by High-Redshift Clusters of Galaxies. I. Cluster Mass Reconstruction

We present the results of a weak lensing survey of six high-redshift (z > 0.5), X-ray-selected clusters of galaxies. We have obtained ultra-deep R-band images of each cluster with the Keck Telescope

A Massive Cluster of Galaxies at z = 0.996

We report the identification of a cluster of galaxies around the high-redshift radio galaxy 3CR 184 at z = 0.996. The identification is supported by an excess of galaxies observed in projection in

The galaxy-subhalo connection in low-redshift galaxy clusters from weak gravitational lensing

We measure the gravitational lensing signal around satellite galaxies in a sample of galaxy clusters at $z<0.15$ by combining high-quality imaging data from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope with a

A comparison of weak-lensing masses and X-ray properties of galaxy clusters

We present measurements of the masses of 20 X-ray luminous clusters of galaxies at intermediate redshifts, determined from a weak-lensing analysis of deep archival R-band data obtained using the

Weak-Lensing Detection of Cl 1604+4304 at z = 0.90

We present a weak-lensing analysis of the high-redshift cluster Cl 1604+4304. At z = 0.90, this is the highest redshift cluster yet detected with weak lensing. It is also one of a sample of

Weak lensing observations of the ``dark'' cluster MG 2016+112

We investigate the possible existence of a high-redshift (z=1) cluster of galaxies associated with the QSO lens system MG2016+112. From an ultra-deep R- and less deep V- and I-band Keck images and a

Gravitational Lensing of Distant Field Galaxies by Rich Clusters: II. Cluster Mass Distributions.

We construct a photometric catalogue of very faint galaxies (I < 25.5) using deep CCD images taken with the 4.2m William Herschel telescope taken of fields centred on two distant X-ray luminous

Gravitational lensing of distant field galaxies by rich clusters - I. Faint galaxy redshift distributions.

{}From deep optical images of three clusters selected by virtue of their X-ray luminosity and/or optical richness (1455+22; $z=0.26$, 0016+16; $z=0.55$ and 1603+43; $z=0.89$), we construct

Detection of systematic gravitational lens galaxy image alignments - Mapping dark matter in galaxy clusters

A gravitational lens distorts most background galaxies by stretching along a circle centered on the lens. This systematic alignment of 20-60 faint background galaxy images has been detected, centered

Detection of massive forming galaxies at redshifts z>l

THE complex problem of when and how galaxies formed has only recently become susceptible to direct attack. It has been known for some time that the excess of blue galaxies counted at faint

Constraints on cold dark matter theories from observations of massive x-ray-luminous clusters of galaxies at high redshift

During the course of a gravitational lensing survey of distant, X-ray selected Einstein Observatory Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS) clusters of galaxies, we have studied six X-ray-luminous

CLUSTER MASS RECONSTRUCTION FROM WEAK GRAVITATIONAL LENSING

Kaiser & Squires have proposed a technique for mapping the dark matter in galaxy clusters using the coherent weak distortion of background galaxy images caused by gravitational lensing. We

The extended medium sensitivity survey distant cluster sample - X-ray data and interpretation of the luminosity evolution

The X-ray properties of a cluster of galaxies subsample of the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey is described. A summary of this sample and its implication has been presented previously;

A faint galaxy redshift survey to B=24

Using the multislit LDSS-2 spectrograph on the {\it William Herschel Telescope} we have completed a redshift survey in the magnitude range $22.5 1$ and includes the highest redshift galaxy

Dark Matter in MS 1224 from Distortion of Background Galaxies

We explore the dark matter distribution in ms1224.7+2007 using the gravitational distortion of the images of faint background galaxies. Projected mass image reconstruction reveals a highly

Redshift Clustering in the Hubble Deep Field

We present initial results from a redshift survey carried out with the low-resolution imaging spectrograph on the 10 m W. M. Keck Telescope in the Hubble Deep Field. In the redshift distribution of
