Perfect tape measure for laying out a 12x16 foot summer kitchen on a flat site. I used 6 different tape measures when I was laying out the corners (3:4:5 triangle across the diagonal, i.e., 20 foot diagonal) (when you get the 4 corners squared). So I had these various new to new-ish tape measures, each one measuring out a side or diagonal of the 12'x16' foundation corners. I came to a definite opinion which measure I like best on this project. I've been doing home improvements here for 30 years.

This Stanley Big Max 25' tape is pretty good. It's my choice. I like that it's a durable and rugged, fat measure easy to read and I can span over 8' without it collapsing like a wet noodle when I'm doing a lot of check measures (width of room, space from hillside to deck). It has a good catch tip for rock solid accurate measurements.

Its main disadvantages are that it runs out of tape at 25 feet, and sometimes the distances are longer. Also, I wish it would glow in the dark. It would be really cool if they made a metric or bi version. Metric is good for fraction-challenged folks, like when you're adjusting corners to square that 12'x16' building site and trying to remember if the other diagonal was 21-3/8 or 21-3/4.

The next time I need a 25' tape measure, I would get this one again.

These are still a great choice if you are measuring for a living. The clip always seems to be the first thing to go (eventually). Don’t get it wet if you can help it. It doesn’t seem to like excessive water. The blade and spring will stick and rust, also eventually. It’s a little chunky, the weight is a little awkward. It likes to fly off my hip. Luckily it is robust. I wish they would revisit the clip design.

I'm no pro by any means, but I do have a special propensity for losing tape measures. Usually I find them all when I resume renovations and when I have time I retrace my steps, like a country song played backwards.... you get things back.

Well, time to replace, and I decided to spend some money on one, and this was the pick. I can say it is big, which needed to be wide enough to get to that 14' of reach (which it can do).

It functions well for me, has handled the few minor bumps along the way, and although I'm no pro, the heavily used end seems to have additional reinforcement for years of use.
