I am not a woodsman. I am not a camper. I enjoy day hikes and sleeping in my bed. I have been burning wood in our wood stove for a few years now and been struggling to get it started without kindling. Those days are gone. I had a longer piece of wood that didn’t fit my stove so I saved it to the side and turned it into kindling with this deal so fast. And that little bucket of kindling is lasting us 5 days now and the fires get going in so fast. Yup. I am a big time Dummy. And obviously I knew about kindling but didn’t want to buy it because they charge you like $25 for a bag of kindling and it’s what $1 worth of actual wood? So I have been starting all my fires by wedging a piece of wood into a corner and churning through junk mail to get my fires going. I have had this kindling tool 5 days. Used it one of those days. The day it arrived. Which is probably unsafe due to covid-19 but what the hey I need to get warm faster it’s 34 out and it’s only October. Method: So I used a mini sledge hammer, one of the handheld ones. I tried to cut in line with the wood seams and that seemed to help but it wasn’t necessary. I also looked at another wall mounted kindling product but it’s $110 more than this item. The wall one might be better for wifey, but She’s more into starting the fires. Probably would be good to have a spare block of 4x4 around because I definitely put some wood in horizontally to split it that way and it did that fine too. If you have a spare old belt or bicycle tube you can wrap that around a bunch of wood and just split it fairly quickly by picking it up and turning it in place. Lookup some youtube videos for wood splitting with a froe, I think that method may work nicely here.
This is a review for the Kindling Cracker Firewood Kindling Splitter by Kindling Cracker.
I bought this as a humorous Christmas gift for my son. Once he took off the fancy bow, naturally we had to go play with it straight away. A half hour later and we're back inside with armloads of kindling. The splitter works perfectly and is even better than advertised. I've had fireplaces and wood stoves for my entire life, and figure I've seen every kind of splitter and maul by now. I had expected the Kindling Cracker to be good, but how could it be much of an improvement on what's already out there? Well, surprise, surprise - it's good and better. I couldn't be happier with this thing and here's why: I haven't been able to split kindling for a few years because of a bum shoulder, but today I discovered that with the Kindling Cracker I'm able to split SINGLE HANDED (with my trusty 4# Stanley sledge) all the kindling I'm in the mood for. I can even do it sitting down. This turned out to be a huge surprise gift for me because I never expected that I'd be able to split wood again. My son loves it, too, and the only downside is now we have to take turns.
Clean design, bullet-proof, super stable. The round top makes comfortable in the hand to carry.
Edit: I just bought an Estwing MRF3LB 3-Pound Sure Strike Fiberglass Drilling Hammer and it works even better than the Stanley for me.

My family and I just moved from the city to a more rural area and now use firewood as our primary heating source. We purchase our firewood from local vendors, so that isn't a problem. I purchased this, so we could make kindling efficiently and most importantly, safely. I suppose this device would not replace an axe to make kindling, but the learning curve for using an axe is very steep and can be unforgiving if you make a mistake. The Kindling Cracker works very well and is easy to use. I use a 4lb sledgehammer and have learned to make sure that you align the grain of the wood with the blade of the cracker. A good whack with the sledgehammer makes short work of splitting the wood. The next thing I need to do is actually mount the cracker on a stump or make a stand for it, this way it will work even better. My only gripe is that some of the wood we have is too big in circumference to fit into the cracker. They do make a larger Cracker if that is a problem for you. For now, it really meets my needs.
I was looking for a safer way to split logs into kindling, and found this. I wasn't sure if this would really work, but it performs just as advertised. Very sturdy, should last forever. Delivered in a very timely manner. All in all, quite satisfied.
I have waited to write a review for this product. I wanted to check its durability and function first. My wife ordered this for me for Christmas. So far, I have been extremely pleased with the product. I am big time into grilling and doing BBQ. I have multiple smokers and grills. I use it to split hickory logs for that purpose. It has been excellent. No issues, very satisfied. It is of course limited to the opening of the splitter which I believe is 7 inches which is fine for my use. It makes very short order for splitting logs and making kindling. It's made in Australia (not China) like so many products these days. I did buy a small sledgehammer at Harbor Freight which works great with the splitter. Overall, I am very happy, highly recommend.
I bought this after seeing numerous reviews and video's on this. The best part is the construction, it's all steel 1 molded piece! You can sharpen with a file and it holds the edge very well. It is very easy to use. Put the wood in and pound away and it makes smaller and smaller kindling for a fireplace. I bought this because I was tired of paying money for kindling and I can make my own. I sat in the garage and pounded maybe 4 or 5 pieces of wood and not a problem, made quite a good batch of fatwood for my wood burning stove. I will eventually mount this to a stump I have and make tons of fatwood and let it dry further for perfect fire starting. I don't find this hard to use and even my wife had fun and thought it was clever and she is not that strong. I even pounded some oak in there and it split it easy. Great idea and I wish I found this earlier! Highly Recommend. Don't buy the cheap knockoffs, buy the official Kindling Cracker you'll love it!
As an older, single woman, I find one of the most difficult tasks to be cutting kindling for my wood stove. Although my brother-in-law and nephew are willing to help me, sometimes the need to build a fire out runs their ability to keep my kindling box full. I'm not exactly safe with an ax so running out of kindling in cold weather left me with a choice to risk bodily injury or huddle under mountains of blankets.
The Kindling Cracker has given me the ability to keep warm, whether or not I have kindling on hand. Its study, cast iron construction and sharp blade easily splits the wood. You simply place a piece of wood on the blade, inside the safety ring, hold it steady and tap it two or three timest with a hammer. (I use a short handled 4 lb hammer) This is enough to drive the wood onto the blade so that I can use both hands to drive the wood over the blade and split the wood. By repositioning the splits I can create any size kindling I need.
The only change I'd make would be to make the Cracker a bit taller. This would make it easier to create kindling from longer pieces of wood.
I do actually like this Kindling Cracker - the only downside for me is the (very) high price considering what it is.
That said, I have tried other design log splitters and never felt comfortable with the “open bladed” type which I had originally ordered and thought would have been better in use
It soon became apparent that the open blade would or could be a potential issue especially when trying to split my hard wood logs (seasoned oak, ash etc) and if too much force was used to hammer the log, or it split easier than expected, there was always the chance that you would follow through with the hammer, or worse, one of your hands (you use one hand to steady the log for the initial hit) and strike the open blade. Hammers can be replaced - you hands cant :(
So, with the above in mind, I searched for something that at least on the face of it, looked safer to use.
There are plenty of this type available on line (with the halo above the blade), but either ridiculously cheap, looked quite spindly or very little credible reviews other than “best thing Ive bought…” which is no real use
Finally settled on this Kindling Cracker - yes it is expensive, and realistically I feel it should really be around the £50-£70 price bracket, but in its defence, it is well thought out, very sturdy and appears to be a single cast of metal so shouldnt flex under duress like some of the collapsible types I have seen
The blade appears blunt when inspected, certainly not knife sharp but could still cause damage, but does appear to work when splitting logs - if the edge was any finer it would soon dull after a few logs had been split, so think this is the best compromise between sharpness and longevity of the edge
It is super easy to split soft wood logs but with a little more effort it also works well with my hard wood logs too with the “halo” actually helping to support larger logs (keeping one hand out of the way) prior to hitting them with the hammer. Smaller logs dont require as much effort to split, but you need to support them first, but one small tap will bed the log onto the blade and you can then remove your supporting hand while striking with the hammer
The best thing I like about the “halo” at the top is that it actually acts as a safety rail that stops the hammer following through if the logs splits too easily - this prevents the hammer, or more importantly, your hands getting anywhere near the blade when splitting logs
Obviously common sense should prevail when using this type of tool, but I feel this is certainly worth considering if you are the nervous type or have limited mobility issues and think if used sensibly, can last you a lifetime and will your hands out of harms way too. Which is nice :)
