The second edition of Janet Lennox Moyer's THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is an absolute necessity for everybody who works in landscape lighting or who is seriously interested in creating their own garden lighting. Ms Moyer has greatly revised and expanded the color plates and Chapter 4, "The Design Process - Documenting and Installing Landscape Lighting" as well as writing an entirely new Chapter 5 "Follow-up Work - Record Documents and Project Maintenance." These changes and additions and the many other updates make the new edition well worth the purchase price.

First published in 1992, THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK has served as the single and indispensable reference for the landscape lighting industry. It has offered all new landscape lighting practitioners guidance and provided an emerging industry the foundation necessary on which to build solid practice. While there is a wealth of other books that offer how-to help and publish pretty pictures, none of them even attempt to define and explain professional practice for the landscape lighting industry with Ms Moyer's authority and confidence.

THE LANDSCAPE LIGHTING BOOK is not an easy book to read but it is well worth the effort. Once you understand the theory behind the short cuts and rules-of-thumb that other how to books offer, you are free to create your own. With the freedom you gain when you understand and can apply those fundamental principals and concepts to your landscape lighting, you become like the cook who ignores the printed recipe and creates a masterpiece of culinary art.

The book gives a well documented narrative about landscape lighting design process. One can easily see auther's vast on hand experience in small details. Through case studies one can discover a tried and tested method she has been practicing. It gives really indepth view on not only design and installaiton but also maintenance and common faults. It would have been perfect if there would have been an inclusion of LED technology in lamp, luminaire and practise section. And how she manages lighting power guidelines with conventional technology of halogen. Overall I would say this as an essential reading book for landscape lighting.

"The Landscape Lighting Book" is an illustrative gem of a book, with thorough coverage of the processes and theories behind the many aspects of landscape lighting. Moyer's knowledge and experience is passed on to the reader in what is a most concise delivery of information on planning, designing and maintaining stunning lighting installations for landscapes, walkways and buildings.

The most effective and trouble-free results are obtained from thorough preparation. Knowing who should be involved in the landscape lighting preparation and planning, and at which stages of the process, is crucial, whether directly or indirectly involved with the lighting job. Moyer explains the importance of communication with not only the customers, but also with the contractors, whose work will provide results which benefit the maintenance of the premises with a finished job that has taken into account the lighting requirements.

Moyer goes far beyond simply the hardware and procedures involved when lighting the landscape. She effectively discusses properties of various landscape lighting, in regards to its interaction with organic and inorganic surfaces. It is easy to follow because it is so clearly and efficiently illustrated. Soils are also discusses in terms of their acidity and their effects on mounting materials, as well as which items will provide long-term reliability to stay put over time based on the soil type density. With Moyer's eye for design, and her awareness of the dynamic nature of an organic landscape, it is no surprise that she is such a respected, reliable professional. She takes all variables into account, and freely shares that knowledge in impeccable detail.

This book includes numerous black and white illustrations and photos throughout the text, which make the subject matter easy to follow. Additionally, there are fifteen double-sided pages in the middle of the book, featuring full-color photos that express the dramatic impact that lighting produces, contrasts the effects throughout seasons, and demonstrates several scenarios and lighting configurations. The appendices include trade-related symbols, abbreviations and specifications checklist. An extensive, easy to navigate, header-organized lighting manufacturer's directory is also featured, complete with addresses, phone numbers and websites.

If you are a landscape lighting professional, this updated edition is sure to prove a most valuable reference. I love this book for its completeness. It is well organized and expertly executed. This guide can be a great resource to gain insight to the many ways in which landscape lighting can be beneficial, whether to achieve a beautiful view, a secure premises or a functional environment that is focused on safety.
