With Taylor Swift’s arrival in Toronto, there’s no better time to dive into the emotions and stories her music inspires. From romantic getaways to soulful reflections, Toronto has accessible locations that let you step into the themes of her songs. Whether you’re celebrating new love, career growth, or personal rediscovery, here are places that will have you feeling like you’re living in a Taylor Swift song.

Lush, green and tall Metasequoia Trees along Ansan Jarak-gil trail. There is a smooth board walk with a railing down the trail.

Distillery District

Taylor’s music often captures the feeling of new love—the butterflies and intense crushes that come with it. Stroll through Toronto’s Distillery District, with charming cobblestone streets, the iconic “LOVE” sign, grab some hot chocolate from the local vendors and explore cozy spots, perfect for a romantic outing. Whether you’re posing by the “LOVE” sign or dreaming under the twinkling lights, it’s all about embracing the romantic spark here. (Partially accessible)

Toronto Music Garden

This space is perfect for a daydreamer at heart. Inspired by Johann Sebastian Bach’s “First Suite for Unaccompanied Cello,” the Toronto Music Garden features six movements that take visitors on an emotional journey, each with a different design and mood. Stroll along the pathways and the water, where music and nature intertwine, and let the melodies inspire your idealized love stories.

Harbourfront & Woodbine Beach

Sometimes, all you need is water to reflect, let go, and find peace again. Taylor’s lyrics often delve into self-discovery, and Toronto’s waterfront provides a wonderful setting for this journey. As you walk along the accessible boardwalk at Woodbine Beach or take in the views at the Harbourfront, remember how Taylor’s lyrics remind us that it’s okay to lose yourself a little—to make space for self-discovery especially in the stillness of nature.

Evergreen Brick Works

Evergreen Brick Works embodies that bittersweet feeling of love fading and seasons changing, “like the colors in autumn, so bright just before they lose it all.” As you walk along the boardwalk trails, you’re surrounded by a diverse range of orange, red and brown leaves – shifting scenery that brings Taylor’s lyrics to life. It’s a beautiful spot to watch autumn and winter unfold among friends, couples, and families. The accessible shuttle from Broadview Station also makes it easy to reach. Learn more here

4. Career & Personal Growth

Toronto Reference Library

More than a space for learning and discovering iconic books and city documents, the Toronto Reference Library has become a place for weddings, grand events, and milestones for all walks of life. Its unique architecture by the late Raymond Moriyama makes it a true gem in the city. Here, like Taylor, you can grow, evolve, and reflect on your own path while surrounded by knowledge and beauty. And, as an ode to her words, you might just get “smarter and harder in the nick of time.”

5. Escapism

Lush, green and tall Metasequoia Trees along Ansan Jarak-gil trail. There is a smooth board walk with a railing down the trail.

Philosophers Walk

Nestled within the University of Toronto’s St. George Campus, the Philosophers Walk is a short and sweet scenic path, one that used to be part of a natural waterway during the Industrial Age. There’s an old-world charm to it, perfect for when you want to step back in time, escape reality, and just let your thoughts wander.

University of Toronto Scarborough Valley

Here, the city fades away, and you’re transported to a space straight out of Folklore. Surrounded by lush greens and long, winding trails, the University of Toronto Scarborough Valley feels like you’re stepping into a fairytale—perfect for wanderers, daydreamers, and anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

6. Romantic Revenge

Royal Ontario Museum (ROM)

For those “Look What You Made Me Do” moments, the ROM’s diverse art exhibits, including Indigenous art, love, history, and memory into beautiful displays. It’s a place where, as Taylor sings, “You paint dreamscapes on the wall, I talk shit with my friends”—a perfect spot to reflect and maybe even swap stories with friends about art, history, or exes who didn’t quite make the cut. With free entry for everyone on the third Tuesday of each month from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM, it’s an accessible way to channel some passionate Swiftie energy.

Learn more about accessibility at the ROM.

7. Idealized Love

Candlelight Concerts

Simply magical. Experience the music of Swift, or enjoy themes like Bollywood and Tollywood on strings, by Candlelight Concerts. For a special Swiftie touch, catch an upcoming Taylor Swift tribute in Markham on November 21. It’s an enchanting setting with dim lights, candles, and talented musicians. It’s a reminder of the softer, dreamier side of love she sings about. All of the hosted locations are said to be accessible, please contact them directly for more information about accessibility. 8. Lust

Craze at the Tarragon Theatre

Catch Craze, a new play beginning on November 19 at the Tarragon Theatre. It’s a story that pulls you into a world of “magic, madness, heaven, sin.” This late-night tale is a blend of chaos, laughter, and intimacy, with surrealist moments and technological twists that would feel right at home in some of Taylor’s more mature lyrics. Perfect for an evening filled with intrigue and thrill.

9. Heartbreak and Healing

Come From Away at the Ed Mirvish Theatre

Heartbreak and healing are familiar themes in Taylor’s music, and Come From Away being shown at the Ed Mirvish Theatre captures these emotions in an intimate, powerful way. This show tells the story of thousands stranded in Newfoundland in the wake of 9/11 and the bonds that formed through shared hardship. As Taylor sings, “Long live all the mountains we moved / I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you,” the resilience and compassion shown on stage reminds us of the strength found in unity, even in the midst of deep heartbreak. It’s a story that resonates with anyone who’s grappled with loss and found healing in connection. Learn more here

Accessible trails are important to ensure everyone can enjoy the beauty of nature. There are many different accessible trails and parks to explore around the world, suitable for a variety of mobility needs. From mountainsides to cityscapes, here are some beautiful trails that cater to a broad range of access needs, making it easier to experience nature’s beauty worldwide.

1. Ansan Jarak-gil Trail – Seoul, South Korea

Hidden within the bustling city of Seoul, the Ansan Jarak-gil Trail is the country’s first barrier-free mountain walking trail. Its smooth, elevated pathways make it friendly for wheelchair users, strollers, and hikers of all ages. Here, one second you are wandering through forests, and next you can find breathtaking views of the city’s skyline. The peaceful atmosphere continues with nearby rest areas, including benches and picnic tables. The route’s entrances are accessible by subway and feature convenient wheelchair charging stations, ensuring a comfortable and inclusive experience.

Upon conducting further research, we discovered that this trail seems to be partially accessible. The Ansan Jarak-gil Trail in Seoul has stairs or curbs on most of its access roads.

2. KullaRulla Trail- Skåne, Sweden

Known locally as “Kulla-Rulla” (a play on the word “roll” in Swedish), this section of the Skåneleden Trail on the Kullahalvön Peninsula offers an easy-going experience across 30 kilometers of diverse landscapes. Through this trail, you can find coastal fishing villages, agricultural lands, and historic towns. The route is built mainly of hard-packed gravel and asphalt, allowing wheelchair users to enjoy it comfortably, with benches placed along the way for scenic breaks. You’ll pass picturesque views of the Öresund Strait and explore the Swedish countryside at a leisurely pace.

Found in the scenic limestone valleys of Derbyshire, the Monsal Trail follows the old Midland Railway line, now converted into a multi-use path. It’s an accessible trail that was built for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, and wheelchair users alike. The trail is flat and wide, making it an excellent option for all wheels. Along the trail, you’ll find tunnels, viaducts (a type of bridge that has a series of arches or columns that can hold up roads), and wide-open views of the rolling English countryside. Listening stations can be found along the route, offering stories of the area’s industrial past, providing a sense of place and history. The peaceful atmosphere makes it a family-friendly venue, perfect for unwinding amidst the beauty of the Peak District.

Boston is a city where history comes alive, and at the heart of it all is Boston Common, the oldest public park in America, established in 1634. Over the centuries, it has transformed from a colonial pasture to a peaceful green space, offering visitors a chance to reflect and relax amidst the hustle and bustle of city life. With its wide, paved pathways, Boston Common is not only a historic landmark but also an inviting, accessible space for all.

Monuments and Sites at Boston Common

As you explore the Common, you’ll encounter several key monuments and sites that blend history, art, and culture. These highlights are fully walkable and wheelchair accessible:

  • Frog Pond – A central feature in the Common that serves as a skating rink in winter and a splash pad in the summer.
  • Shaw/54th Regiment Memorial – Honoring Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and the African-American soldiers who fought in the Civil War.
  • Central Burying Ground – A historic cemetery where soldiers from the Revolutionary War are buried.
  • Boston Massacre Memorial – A striking tribute to those killed during the Boston Massacre, marking a key moment in America’s path to independence.
  • The Embrace – This stunning monument, located in the nearby Boston Common area, commemorates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King’s contributions to the civil rights movement.
  • The Brewer Fountain – A gorgeous, historic fountain dating back to the 1860s, offering a peaceful spot to sit and take in the surroundings.
  • Massachusetts State House Gold Dome – Visible from the edge of the Common, the gold dome of the Massachusetts State House is a striking feature that serves as a reminder of the city’s deep political history.

Next to Boston Common lies the Public Garden, where more accessible attractions await. Don’t miss the Swan Boats, the iconic George Washington Statue, or the charming Make Way for Ducklings sculpture, all easily accessible on well-maintained paths.

The Starting Point of the Freedom Trail

Boston Common isn’t just a beautiful green space; it’s also the starting point of the famous Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile red-brick path that weaves through the city’s most significant Revolutionary War sites. After taking in the monuments of the Common, set out on the trail to dive deeper into Boston’s rich history.

The post Embracing Diversity: How Companies Can Champion Disability Employment Every Month appeared first on AccessNow.

]]>
<![CDATA[

In a world that’s constantly evolving, progress often hinges on our ability to embrace diversity and inclusivity. Yet, there’s one facet of diversity that has often been overlooked: the inclusion of people with disabilities in the workforce. That’s where National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) steps in, shining a spotlight on the challenges faced by disabled individuals, the untapped potential we possess, and how companies can bridge the gaps.

The Significance of NDEAM

NDEAM, celebrated every October, serves as a crucial annual observance. It’s not just a month filled with symbolic gestures or measuring employment statistics; it’s a rallying cry for change.

But why does disability employment still need an entire month dedicated to it? The answer lies in the persistent barriers faced by people with disabilities in the job market.

Barriers Faced by People with Disabilities

Despite significant advancements in disability rights and accessibility, significant hurdles still hinder many individuals with disabilities from achieving their full potential in the workforce. Prejudice, misconceptions, and outdated stigmas persist. These barriers often manifest in various forms:

1. Stereotypes and Biases:

Myths and stereotypes about disability continue to influence hiring decisions, limiting opportunities for qualified individuals.

2. Lack of Accessibility:

Inaccessible workplaces and technologies can pose insurmountable challenges for disabled employees, making it difficult to perform jobs effectively.

3. Unequal Opportunities:

People with disabilities are often underrepresented in leadership roles, leading to a lack of diverse perspectives within organizations.

4. Inadequate Support:

Many companies still fail to provide the necessary accommodations and resources for disabled employees to thrive.

The Untapped Potential

In these barriers lies a missed opportunity for both individuals and businesses. People with disabilities bring a unique set of skills, experiences, and perspectives to the table. Our resilience, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability are assets to any modern workforce but our strengths often go unrecognized, under-utilized or untapped. By harnessing this potential, companies can gain a competitive edge.

How Companies Can Address Gaps

The path to a more inclusive workforce begins with awareness and action. Companies can take several steps to address the gaps and create a workplace that welcomes individuals with disabilities:

1. Promoting a Culture of Inclusion:

Promoting a culture of inclusion is not just about having a diversity statement on your website—it’s about creating an environment where every individual feels genuinely welcomed and valued.

Here’s a few actionable steps on how to do it:

  • Leadership Commitment: Inclusion starts from the top. Company leaders should champion diversity and make it a core value. When leaders actively support disability inclusion, it sets the tone for the entire organization.

  • Employee Resource Groups: Encourage the formation of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) focused on disabilities. ERGs provide a space for employees to connect, share experiences, and advocate for inclusive practices.

  • Open Communication: Foster open communication channels where employees can express their concerns and ideas for promoting inclusivity. Create platforms for employees to share their experiences and stories.

  • Inclusive Policies and Practices: Ensure that company policies and practices are inclusive. This may include flexible work arrangements, accessible facilities, and inclusive language in internal and external communications.

2. Implementing Accessible Hiring Processes:

Ensuring that recruitment processes are accessible to all is a pivotal step in creating equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

Here’s a few steps to make it happen:

  • Accessible Job Postings: Ensure that job postings are written in a way that’s clear and concise. Mention any specific accommodations or accessibility features that the workplace provides.

  • Interview Accommodations: Offer flexible interview options, including remote interviews, and provide clear instructions on requesting accommodations. Allow candidates to choose the format that suits their needs best.

  • Training for Recruiters: Train recruiters and interviewers on inclusive hiring practices. They should be knowledgeable about different disabilities and how to make the interview process accessible and comfortable.

  • Technology and Tools: Make sure the application process, including the company’s career website, is fully accessible for screen readers and other assistive technologies.

3. Offering Accommodations:

Providing accommodations is a legal obligation in many places, and it’s essential for ensuring that employees with disabilities can perform their roles effectively.

Here’s a pathway on how to go about it:

    • Interactive Process: Engage in an interactive process with employees to determine their specific accommodation needs. Each person’s requirements may differ.

    • Flexibility: Be flexible in accommodating needs, whether it’s providing assistive technology, making physical adjustments to workspaces, or allowing flexible work hours.

    • Accessibility Audits: Regularly conduct accessibility audits to identify areas where accommodations can be improved, and keep up with evolving assistive technology.

    • Feedback Loop: Establish a feedback mechanism for employees to report issues with accommodations and ensure prompt resolution.

    4. Providing Training and Awareness Programs:

Educating employees on disability inclusion and etiquette is key to breaking down barriers of misunderstanding.

      Here’s how to approach it:

      • Comprehensive Training: Develop comprehensive disability awareness training programs for employees at all levels. Training should cover understanding different types of disabilities, appropriate language, and etiquette.

      • Real-World Scenarios: Use real-world scenarios and case studies to illustrate the challenges individuals with disabilities may face. This creates empathy and helps employees better understand the need for accommodations.

      • Inclusive Language: Encourage the use of inclusive language in all communications. Educate employees on the importance of respectful and person-first language when discussing disabilities.

      • Ongoing Education: Disability awareness is not a one-time event. Make it an ongoing part of your company’s culture by regularly updating training programs and promoting discussions around disability inclusion.

By actively implementing these strategies, companies can work towards creating an inclusive environment where the untapped potential of individuals with disabilities is harnessed, and barriers are continually broken down. It’s a journey that not only supports NDEAM but also contributes to a more diverse, innovative, and compassionate workplace throughout the year.

        How to get around

Although Fort Lauderdale may appear to be a walkable/strollable city with relatively short distances between neighbourhoods, the best way to get around is by car. Due to the hot and humid South Florida climate and limited shade, people often opt for other convenient transportation options.

        Car Rentals

For those seeking flexibility and independence, renting a wheelchair accessible vehicle during your trip to Fort Lauderdale can be an excellent option. Having your own accessible vehicle allows you to explore the city at your own pace and visit various sites without relying on public transportation or taxi services. Fort Lauderdale offers ample accessible parking spaces throughout the city, ensuring convenient parking for individuals with a valid parking placard. To rent a wheelchair accessible van, check out Push Mobility Transport. With a rented accessible van, you can navigate Fort Lauderdale with ease, accessing various neighbourhoods and sites comfortably and conveniently throughout your stay.

        Taxis / Uber

In Fort Lauderdale, accessing wheelchair accessible taxis can pose a challenge as there are limited options available. Despite a few companies offering wheelchair accessible taxis, securing one on short notice can be difficult. During peak times, it is not uncommon to find these taxis fully booked, with reservations often stretching far into the future. Other times expect a 1 – 3 hour wait. If you don’t require a wheelchair accessible vehicle, it is quite easy to catch an Uber or Lyft at fairly inexpensive rates.

The Micro Mover is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible but for those who can manage a few steps, it is a free and sustainable mobility option to help get folks around downtown, Las Olas and the beach. Download the “Ride Circuit” app to book your ride.

        Water Taxis

Fort Lauderdale offers wheelchair accessible Water Taxis, providing a unique and scenic way to explore the city. To ensure a smooth experience, it is recommended to prioritize specific stops where the accessible ramp and sufficient space on the Water Taxi are available. Stop Four and Stop One stand out as prime choices for wheelchair users. These stops have reliable accessibility features, including wheelchair accessible ramps and spacious accommodations onboard the Water Taxis. By strategically planning your route and prioritizing these stops, you can maximize your enjoyment of the water taxi experience.

        Public Transit

If you have more time to spare and prefer a budget-friendly option, Fort Lauderdale’s bus system can be a viable choice for getting around the city. The bus system is generally accessible, making it convenient for wheelchair users to navigate Fort Lauderdale. With bus stations located along the A1A and serving many hotels, you can easily leave your hotel, hop on a bus and reach various destinations throughout the city. This allows you to explore Fort Lauderdale at your own pace while enjoying the scenic views. Make sure to check the specific bus schedules and plan your itinerary accordingly to optimize your time and make the most of your experience.

Toronto, Ontario – Traveling can be a very stressful event for people using mobility devices and can negatively impact their independence and safety. Far too often, we know critical mobility devices are being damaged in transit impacting a person’s mobility. Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC) and AccessNow are partnering to equip travellers with the information they need to plan and advocate for safe and comfortable travel.

Travel inequity is something AccessNow founder and disability activist, Maayan Ziv, has experienced herself.

“It is so important for people with disabilities to be aware and knowledgeable of their rights. Too often there are excuses for why we can’t be accommodated. Knowing your rights is half the battle,” said Ziv. “These incidents continue to happen, so until legislation is passed by the Canadian government, we have to equip people with the information and resources they need to avoid as many problems as possible.”

“We’ve heard far too many accounts from our clients and others about inequitable travel experiences,” said Stacey Lintern, CEO, Muscular Dystrophy Canada. “We are committed to better understanding the barriers and working with AccessNow, people with disabilities, the travel industry, government and other stakeholders to address these issues so people traveling with mobility devices have an equitable, positive and safe travel experience. Currently, Canada does not track this information so our first step is to gather data.”

This lack of information makes it difficult for people with disabilities to prepare and make informed travel plans. MDC and AccessNow are committed to working with people with disabilities to gather data, and then develop an Accessible Travel Toolkit that can be used as a guide for persons with disabilities to use to ensure positive travel experience.

We want to hear from you. We’re collecting travel experiences to address the inequities people with mobility devices face when travelling.

        <![CDATA[

The City of Surrey is located on the outskirts of Vancouver. As one of the fastest-growing and most multicultural cities in Canada, there is always so much to explore, including many of their expansive green spaces and beaches.

Our team at AccessNow had the opportunity to check out a few trails within Surrey to see how well they could be navigated by someone using a mobility aid. “Through our work with the AccessNow team, we are further advancing Surrey as Canada’s most accessible city, ensuring that people of all ages and abilities can fully participate in City life,” said Tara Cleave, Manager of Support Services and Accessibility at the City of Surrey.

We had AccessNow Mapper, Jenna Reed-Cote check out all that these trails had to offer in her manual wheelchair. The best part is that many of these trails were almost entirely accessible, offering smooth terrain and accessible washrooms on route.

“We are proud of our commitment to providing accessible and inclusive services, programs and opportunities for all members of our community. We thank AccessNow for their partnership and support as we press forward to map our parks and trails in order to empower people of all abilities to discover the accessible outdoors”.

Here are a few amazing accessible trails in Surrey, BC!

        Fleetwood Park

From picnic shelters and play areas to scenic gardens and nature trails, there is so much to do at Fleetwood Park. The nature trail loop in the park is 1.8 kilometres long and has a mix of partially accessible and accessible terrains (it is loose gravel for the most part, but there are some paved areas). Jenna was able to navigate the path in her manual wheelchair, but it does get bumpy, so it might be a trail to avoid if you’re looking for completely smooth riding. There are also several slopes which may be a challenge for some.

Two individuals walking on the Whistler Valley Trail. The trail is a smooth asphalt pathway, and you can see large mountains in the background. The photo appears to be taken in the Fall as the trees are various colours of green, red and yellow.

At one point on the trail, you will come across this beautiful bridge which crosses over a stream. Please be cautious as the wooden planks may be slightly uneven.

Two individuals walking on the Whistler Valley Trail. The trail is a smooth asphalt pathway, and you can see large mountains in the background. The photo appears to be taken in the Fall as the trees are various colours of green, red and yellow.

The paved parts of the trail are mostly smooth, but there are some uneven areas as shown here.

Along the trail, there are two spacious bathrooms with handrails. Unfortunately they do not have automatic door openers, but the doors are fairly lightweight. There are also many picnic tables and benches along the path for those who would like to take a break, birdwatch, or simply enjoy the scenery.

If you’re looking to check out one of the playgrounds, the splash pad is most accessible as it is floored in cement and fairly easy to navigate. The traditional playground, however, is covered in wood chips and therefore inaccessible to most wheelchair users.

        Tynehead Regional Park

This park is 260 hectares of meadow and forest on the banks of the Serpentine River headwaters in Guildford. It is an ideal place for a family day out, with picnic tables, the Tynehead Fish Hatchery, and spectacular nature trails.

A smooth pathway winding along the edge of the ocean in Stanley Park, Vancouver. There is a large rock protruding out of the ocean close to the walkway. There are large mountains in the background, which add to the picturesque scenery seen from the trail.

The entrance to Tynehead Regional Park. There is a parking lot with two designated accessible parking spots nearby.

The Tynehead Perimeter Trail was completely paved and easy to navigate in a wheelchair, with the exception of some of the resting areas which were surrounded by loose gravel. With that being said, there were still tons of accessible benches along the trail, so finding a place to rest was not a concern.

The trail had very smooth terrain throughout.

Jenna did notice that there were some slight to moderate inclines which might be hard for someone in a manual wheelchair, but otherwise it is a very smooth, leisurely trail.

We do suggest being cautious (especially with pets) as this park has a lot of wildlife, and is a habitat for owls, hawks and coyotes. The City of Surrey also tells us that the headwaters of the Serpentine River are spawning and rearing habitats for trout and salmon. The various trails and viewing platforms within the park offer great viewing for spawning salmon in October through December.

There is an accessible gender-neutral private stall washroom in this park, as well as accessible portable bathroom facilities.

A smooth pathway winding along the edge of the ocean in Stanley Park, Vancouver. There is a large rock protruding out of the ocean close to the walkway. There are large mountains in the background, which add to the picturesque scenery seen from the trail.

        Bear Creek Park

The trail at Bear Creek Park is mostly accessible, with a mix of smooth paved paths and loose gravel / dirt that is a bit bumpy and uneven at times. In some areas, the terrain has a lot of cracks and may require some caution to traverse. However, there are very few slopes overall so it is a great option for those who prefer a flat stroll.

This is what some of the unpaved areas of the trail look like. These areas are a mix of loose gravel and grass patches.

There are also some parts of the trail that have wooden boardwalks and bridges.

Along the trail, there are a few picnic tables which do not have a paved path to get to, so you have to traverse through the grass. However, there are several benches along the trail for resting which are easily accessible. There is also a washroom that appeared to be accessible from the outside, but was locked at the time of visiting so we cannot comment for sure.

Some other points of interest on this trail include an outdoor gym, a playground, an accessible outdoor pool, as well as the Bear Creek Water Playground and the Bear Creek Park Gardens.

The gardens within Bear Creek Park are open year round and offer a spectacular assortment of plants and flowers.

The walking track is a perfect place to continue your stroll.
