Hands-on, innovative, and endlessly inspiring.
Innovations, connections, and solutions start in the classroom at the University of Mary Washington, led by faculty experts highly regarded in their fields of study and dedicated to teaching undergraduate students, and extended beyond the classroom through internships, service projects, undergraduate research and study abroad. We encourage each other to think deeply, critically, and creatively, and we work together in the labs and studios, online and on-campus.
Here, students are active team-builders and community-makers, understanding that strong connections create powerful experiences. Faculty members are not only educators, but mentors, guiding students to become agile, inspired problem-solvers. Plus, every single class is taught by a faculty member or industry expert, not teaching assistants. Our faculty inspire students to think beyond the ordinary, fostering an environment where every voice matters, instilling a culture of impactful contributions, and motivating students to aspire to #LifeAfterMW.
At its core, a Mary Washington education is about thinking big, gaining experience, and finding your place in a vibrant academic community that values impact and innovation.

Library & Resources
Simpson Library constitutes the knowledge center of the university — a physical and virtual manifestation of the institution’s mission of connected, integrated, and engaged teaching, learning, research, and service. Specifically, the Library is a space where people collaborate, gather, research, and share; technology- and human-enabled engine, showcase, and catalyst of innovation; dynamic repository of the university’s teaching, research, and creative scholarship; model of support and service that is responsive to the needs of diverse users and learners.
Education Abroad
The world is your classroom. Expand your global horizons and gain once-in-a-lifetime experiences when you study abroad. UMW offers Faculty-Led Programs, led by UMW professors during breaks from the regular academic calendar or during summer sessions. Students may also participate in UMW’s Approved Programs, which provide the opportunity to study abroad for a summer, semester, or year at an international institution. For the same tuition cost as a semester or year at UMW, students can also study abroad through one of our Exchange Programs. Explore our numerous offerings to determine which education abroad program is right for you!
Turn your passion into your career path.
We want you to learn without limits while you’re here. But, we also want you to take all you learn and use it to fuel your future. We’ll help you get there. About 90% of students are employed (full-time or part-time), enrolled in a graduate course of study, or are participating in national service (e.g. military, Peace Corps) within six months of graduation.
