FIRST PRIZE
‘Théâtre D’opéra Spatial’ takes gold
Jason Allen’s A.I.-generated ‘Théâtre D’opéra Spatial’ takes home first prize in the digital category at the Colorado State Fair

Let’s take a trip to the Colorado State Fair’s fine arts competition, and in particular the ‘digitally manipulated photography’ category, where an entry from jason allen took the top prize.
Given the opportunity, what would AI spend a $300 prize on? Maybe one day we’ll find out, but for now the prize still ends in human hands - even though the work was heavily created by machines. ‘Théâtre D’opéra Spatial’ was a entry submitted by a contestant at the Colorado State Fair, and was generated with the help of the popular text-to-image tool MidJourney.
Perhaps inevitably, the news was met with a fierce backlash from artists who accused him of, essentially, cheating. Allen’s view, on the other hand, is that AI “is a tool, just like the paintbrush is a tool. Without the person, there is no creative force.” Where you stand is your call, but it’s hard to question whether this is the start of AI celebration, and whether, as a cost, it also means the end of traditional human craft.

AI is not a new creation, and whilst many attempts have previously been made, this Cosmopolitan release in 2022 was the first effort to (in their own words) “go the whole nine yards”. The world’s first artificially intelligent magazine cover was the brainchild of 6 women on a Zoom call, with the help of DALL-E 2, and was more or less wrapped up within the hour.

Everyone said art will be the last thing achievable by AI because creativity is a very human feature. Turns out it's the first thing AI perfected.

early ai developments
1955 | logic theorist by | Aan IBM computer program called “The Logic Theorist” was created to prove mathematical theorems. However when asked to generate proofs for simple geometric problems, it came up with solutions that were not only correct but also displayed creativity. |

1965 | eliza by | In 1965 Joseph Weizenbaum debuted ELIZA, an AI program that carries on conversations in the English Language on any topic. Throughout the following decades, advancements in machine learning, natural language processing progressed and began to reveal real-world applications. |
1973 | aaron by | The first notable system appeared in 1973 with the debut of Aaron, developed by Harold Cohen. The Aaron system was an AI assistant that used a symbolic AI approach to help Cohen create black-and-white art drawings. |
recent ai developments
2015 | Deepdream | AI-generated art began its recent ascent in 2015, when Google released DeepDream, which uses a convolutional neural network as an experimental approach to AI art, further advancing the field. |

2018 | ganbreeder/ | GAN models allowed humans to use AI to modify existing images and create new ones. Using this technology, an artist collective made headlines by selling a painting at Christie's auction house for $432,500. The models were trained on 15,000 portraits from the 14th to the 19th century. |
2021 | Dall-E | In January 2021, OpenAI launched Dall-E, providing a publicly accessible and usable system that enabled anyone with internet access to create AI art with text prompts, giving the world a look at AI art’s possibilities. |
