May be a dumb novice but I couldnt get it to work at all. Does not seem very intuitive and after loading a video for editing, could not figure out how to even view it for editing. Maybe some tricks I don't know, but definitely not for a novice.

I've used this for many years and like it but on my current two laptops it's become extremely problematic.
It routinely doesn't remember whatever I put into the Rate Control Mode or Quality boxes. For example, using MP4-AVC/H.264 (Intel QuickSync) with LA-ICQ it keeps switching back to a setting of 51 which is a very low bitrate. Add several clips to the file list, select them all, you would expect to be able to set options for all en masse. But no. You have no idea when settings have "stuck" or not.
With AAC it always seems to encode with a bitrate of 128 whatever bitrate has actually been set.
It's just about usable if you're processing one clip at a time. But sometimes I have dozens to do and don't have time to keep playing cat and mouse.

I used to use XMR for all my video encoding needs but I stopped about 3 years ago due to frequent bugs with every new release.
Today I decided to give it another try, so I installed the current release and gave it go. Almost worked OK, the audio in the output video was out-of-sync or delayed. Fortunately, using MKVMerge fixes the sound issue. I'm about 99% certain I reported this issue years & years ago. It's a pity because I still like XMR, it's easy to use, comprehensive & being free is great value for money!!!!

I needed a video converter capable of batch operation as I had nearly a thousand files of various formats I wanted in Xvid AVI; some of the files were in AVI but had broken index files. Not only did this software perform the needed batch conversion but did so very easily and without issue! Now all my video files are in the same format while keeping the previous video and audio quality at comparable file size.
I've tried many other pieces of software that were either very simple to use but had poor batch function, or vice-versa, and this one accomplished both very well. :)
