My good friend Nick Kwek, from BBC’s The Travel Show, came to the restaurant with his crew and I made these winners to celebrate both occasions. The show had a weekly viewership of 70 million, so it’s no wonder I started getting messages from all around the world after the episode aired. On this day
In 1879, during the Zulu War, the battle of Rorke’s Drift ended. About 150 British and colonial troops successfully defended the mission station against more than 3,000 Zulu warriors; in 1960 the Swiss engineer Jacques Piccard and Lieutenant Don Walsh made the first manned voyage to the floor of the Marianas Trench, near Guam in the Pacific Ocean, in the Trieste submersible, reaching 35,797 feet. The trench is the deepest-known part of the ocean; in 1968 North Korea seized the US navy ship Pueblo, claiming it had intruded into territorial waters on a spying mission. The crew of 83 was released on December 23, 1968; in 1985 the proceedings of the House of Lords were televised experimentally for the first time; in 2020 Wuhan’s population of 11 million people entered full lockdown. One year later an exhibition opened to celebrate the Chinese city’s victory in tackling the Covid-19 pandemic. On January 23, 2021, Johns Hopkins University recorded 2,120,616 deaths on its global dashboard.
Nature notes
The humans were halfway across the field when the snipe lost its nerve. Skulking behind a clump of soft rush, the bird had been hoping that the interlopers didn’t come too near, but when the walkers burst into sudden laughter, the snipe lifted from its hiding place and flew along the brimming dyke in a zig-zag pattern. A snipe’s main self-preservation tactic is its cryptic plumage, a wash of browns allowing it to merge perfectly with a winter-bound field but if flushed out, its twisting and turning flight pattern can sometimes confuse a chasing predator. Britain has a breeding population of about 64,000 pairs but hundreds of thousands more arrive from the Faroes, Iceland and Russia to spend the winter with us. Jonathan Tulloch
