Rachel Zegler Is Walking Back Her Election Outrage

On Friday, Rachel Zegler apologized for airing out some (understandable) postelection feelings between back-to-back performances of Romeo + Juliet the day the race was called for Donald Trump. Did she have to do this? Not really. Here’s what happened.
“I find myself speechless in the midst of this,” Zegler wrote the Wednesday after the election, anticipating “another four years of hatred.” “I echo ethel cain’s statement more than anything,” she continued, referring to a since-deleted Tumblr post the musician penned. “May trump supporters and trump voters and trump himself never know peace.” Zegler added that “there is also a deep, deep sickness in this country that is shown in the sheer amount of people who showed up for this man who threatens our democracy.” After a few more deeply sad and ticked-off posts, she concluded, “fuck donald trump.”
Zegler’s posts were barely a blip on our sleep-deprived postelection brains, but they were apparently enough to incense conservative commentator and Trump apologist Megyn Kelly. During her radio show, Kelly took extra care to stumble over Zegler’s name before condemning her postelection Instagram Stories and proclaiming, “There’s something wrong with this person.” Addressing Zegler’s starring role in Disney’s upcoming live-action Snow White remake, Kelly said, “Hello, Disney! You’re gonna have to redo your film again, because this woman is a pig, and you fired Gina Carano for far less than this nonsense.” (Carano, an MMA fighter and actress, recently sued Disney for firing her after she likened “hating someone for their political views” to Nazi Germany in an X post. Her case will go to trial next year.)
On Friday, perhaps responding to Kelly’s segment and/or her backlash-fearing bosses, Zegler walked back her posts. “I would like to sincerely apologize for the election post I shared on my Instagram last week,” she wrote in a new Instagram Story, adding that she “let my emotions get the best of me. Hatred and anger have caused us to move further and further away from peace and understanding, and I am sorry I contributed to the negative discourse.” Zegler said that people have a “right to their opinion, even when it differs from my own,” before concluding, “I am committed to contributing positively toward a better tomorrow.” Me? I’m fine with “negative discourse,” and I hope Megyn Kelly never finds peace.
