Can Katy Perry catch a break? “Woman’s World,” the you-go-girls lead single to her upcoming album, 143, was so soundly mocked online the pop star had to clarify she intended it as satire. Even the news item that former president and current Republican nominee Donald Trump got shot couldn’t fully distract a laughing public from her flop. She then released a generic Ibiza-core follow-up song, “Lifetimes,” to very little attention. Just her luck: The Environment Department of the Balearic Islands declared that her team lacked the proper authorization to film its video at the protected sand dunes and would be investigated for environmental damage. (A label spokesperson insists they “adhered to all regulations associated with filming in this area.”) You can practically hear the nun who uttered, “Katy Perry, please stop,” in her dying hours cackling in heaven.

But good news has come for Katy Perry: MTV announced that she’ll be receiving the 2024 Video Vanguard Award at this year’s VMAs on September 11. She’ll also be performing a medley of her biggest hits. “Katy is a musical powerhouse and true pop culture icon,” said Paramount executive Bruce Gillmer in a press release. “With her game-changing creative vision, she has become a global phenomenon and taken over the world’s biggest stages.” Maybe she can leave out “Woman’s World” and just perform selections from Teenage Dream?
