I’m very excited to announce the New York Beauty Quilt Along! This quilt along is all about paper piecing. If you’ve never done paper piecing before, it might sound a little bit scary, but trust me, you can do it! The quilt along will feature step-by-step photos and instructions for each block by some very talented quilters, to give you the confidence to get off and running!
New York Beauty block from Kati of From the Blue Chair |
We will be working with 10 New York Beauty blocks, and you can get a preview of the blocks here. Each block instruction makes one 8″ x 8″ block (as shown in the graphics); you can either assemble 4 of the same block to make one large 15.5″ x 15.5″ block (as pictured above), or you can mix and match to make something beautiful!
Here are the approximate fabric requirements if you are planning on making all ten 8″ x 8″ blocks:
– 10 fat eighths for main fabrics (or 5 fat quarters or scrap fabric)
– 1-1/2 yards background fabric
And here is the schedule for the block tutorials:
March 5 – Kim from My Go-Go Life {Week 1 Block 0}
March 12 – Sara from Sew Sweetness {Week 2 Block 5}
March 19 – Megan from Canoe Ridge Creations (Week 3 Block 1}
March 26 – Kati from From the Blue Chair {Week 4 Block 8}
April 2 – Jeni from In Color Order {Week 5 Block 7}
April 9 – Amy from Sukie Don’t You Know Who I Am? {Week 6 Block 6}
April 16 – Katy from The Littlest Thistle {Week 7 Block 3}
April 23 – Lee from Freshly Pieced {Week 8 Block 4}
April 30 – Amy from amylouwho {Week 9 Block 2}
May 7 – Lindsay from Lindsay Sews {Week 10 Block 9}
If you are thinking about participating, please join the Flickr Group!
We’ll be sharing fabric choices and help along the way!
So…are you game?! Grab a button and we’ll see you on March 5th for the first block of the series!!
NYB — my favorite block! I’m going to try and keep up. Maybe if I pull my fabrics and keep them in a basket by my machine, it will remind me to keep going. Love the gallery of stars!
Thank you for this! I keep seeing these and thinking I really want to try but have no idea where to start. This will be so great!
I was at the Road2CA quilt show last month and a booth there was demonstrating a paper piecing project using stabilizer that you can run through the printer versus using the paper piecing paper. I didn’t get the name of the vendor, and they were out of the product. Do you or anyone else know the name of this stabilizer? Know of a stabilier you can run thru the printer?
I own a quilt shop and haven’t heard of this product although it would be wonderful. There is a product called QuiltSmart that is pre-printed in several patterns that makes sewing difficult things very easy. I have had several ladies make LoneStar quilts using rectangles and the stablizer makes the points all match and it turns out beautifully!
June Tailor makes printable foundation piecing sheets that dissolve in water, here http://store.junetailor.com/store/p-171-stitch-n-wash-dissolving-foundation-sheets.aspx
The product I use when I paper piece some of my patterns can be run through an inkjet printer. It’s called Fun-dation Paper. No affiliation, but you can see what it looks like at http://softexpressions.com/software/notions/Fundation.php
I don’t know . . . looks a bit scary to me!!! 🙂
I love NYB. I’ve done a wall hanging but I think I’m join in.
If I could be guaranteed to produce anything as awesome as Kati’s I’d be ‘in’, but all I can see is unpicking and swearing! I’ll see if I can muster some courage!
Oh Sara you have my attention. I have always wanted to make one of these but scared to death of pp so doing it together is a good thing…i am in.
I love paper piecing and this sounds fun!
I can’t join along, too many other things in the works, but I’ll be very interested in seeing what others make.
yes, i will do it! I love paper piecing.
I’ve had a NY Beauty on the list for years, thanks for the motivation! Kati’s mini is gorgeous, and I can’t wait to get started de-stashing with this project. Thanks!
It looks like fun! Great idea.
Awesome thanks!!!!! I will be joining in!!
It is very tempting, I am thinking about it.
KATRIN W.
I can’t wait! not that I’ll do every block, but I love NY Beauties! Always just a little challenging!
I’ve been wanting to try NY Beauty, so this is perfect timing. Looking forward to it!
I’m thinking of joining you. I love paper piecing, and these blocks are so beautiful.
Yahoo! I’m in–NYB is my favorite block. Hey your link to your fist block (March 5 – Kim from My Go-Go Life {Block 0}) says it’s a “blogpost” in address and is unable to take me to a site. When I changed it to “blogspot” in the address it worked…
Counting the days…so excited to start!
Sounds super-fun! I’ll be giving it a try!
Very Nice
I have printed out the blocks to give them a try if I have time but I could not get block number 5 to open – the pdf file was blank on the screen.
Karen
Thanks Kim,
that sounds wonderful, I want to participate!
A NYB-Quilt is on my to do list since years ☺
Liebe Grüße
Bente – Germany
I have been starting and stopping on the block for years, maybe if I follow along and might just finish it. Hope to join you.
I just saw this tip on my friend’s blog and I thought of your quilt-a-long. Check it out here: http://whatahootquilts.blogspot.com/2012/02/februarys-newfo-wipn-along-and-tip-for.html It’s about how to more easily sew the 1/4″ curves.
Sara it is almost here..I will take a picture of my fabrics soon and post it…
Ok…this is going to sound really dumb….but how do I join. I am brand new to blogging but really want to do this!! =) Please help! I started the Flickr group but how do I get the button?
Same here! I am new to blogging and relatively new to quilting. I would like to try this as well…but I don’t know how to add the button. Thanks to anyone who can help 🙂
I’ve been resisting QAL this year, but this one pulled me in! Looks like fun:)
I have dreamed of NYB quilt for a loooong time… Shall I join now or not? The biggest problem is the time, the days are just too short! Atleast I’ll follow your progress;)
Hello! I would LOVE to do the New York Beauty block that Kati did and it’s not in the patterns… where is it found at?
Thanks!
Never managed to do paper piecing before but I think this time I will give it a try! this is a year for new things.

Hi Sara,
good idea, the NYB is since years on my to-do-list, but never tried it because the curves.
Now I will try it!
Greetings from Germany
Susanne
I would like to know where to get the New York Beauty block that Kati did. Is it available on line somewhere? I cant wait to get started on these blocks.
I was at the Road2CA cover display last 30 days and a sales space there was indicating a report piecing venture using backing that you can run through the printing device compared to using the report piecing report. I didn’t get the name of the source, and they were out of the item. Do you or anyone else know the name of this stabilizer? Know of a stabilier you can run thru the printer?
Just printed out my last two patterns! This has been fun and it gave me the courage to try something I don’t think i would have ever tried without this quilt along. Thank you for doing this.
Thank you for creating this quilt a long I learned so much now if someone would just create aquilt along to teach me how to create my own paper piecing blocks……………
I just found this site and I am in love with the NYC in paper piecing!
I would like to make it. I found the tutorials but I have problems in downloading the templates. I get an error message!
Is there a chance to access this templates elsewhere?
Please, please help me!
Thanks in advance
Ingrid
sorry, I haven´t read your warning about the e-mail address: As I am not sure if you can reach me, I send you mine: [email protected]
Thanks again
I have just recently become interested in paper piecing and consequently inNYB! I found your blog site while googling both and would be interested in obtaining the patterns. I like the way they start out easy and simple. Thanks. [email protected]
I, too, am interested in the NYB and would love to access the templates you all used to create your beautiful blocks. Please contact me and let me know if it is still possible to gain access to the templates and if so, how. Thank you so much!
I have only just found this quilt along after reading the Elm Creek Quilting series by Jennifer Chiaverini.
By the time I scrolled down to the date I was distraught to find it was last year!
Any chance of obtaining the patterns please??

The links to the pdfs are working again for anyone following this quilt along.
Go to:

Haha, I just copied the link to paste here too! I just wonder if I’ll be able to find the curved flying geese template. I’m not sure where that was originally.
Well, I may be a year late and a dollar short but have to do each of these blocks. All other projects put on hold.

Just wanted to let you know that the link for Block 6 is not working. I’m so sad as I want to follow along.
Amy’s blog is no longer working so I cannot find the instructions for Block 6 of the New York beauty Quilt :'(
