After an epically unfiltered rant, an arrogant, loudmouth U.S. Army Colonel is reassigned to the Netherlands, where he is punished with a command position at the least important army base in the world. After serving with distinction in every warzone of the last three decades, he now finds himself in charge of a base with no guns, no weapons and no tactical purpose. Instead, it has a Michelin-star-level commissary, top-notch bowling alley and the best (and only) fromagerie in the U.S. Army. Surrounded by a diverse group of underdogs, the colonel tries to reinstall military discipline and professionalism with the help of the base's previous interim leader, who just happens to be his estranged daughter.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

A vehicle for Denis Leary's cranky charm that generously spreads the wealth amongst its likable ensemble, Going Dutch could use more discipline but shows plenty of potential.

Lisa Weidenfeld Boston Globe Leary is unquestionably the star, but the way he interacts with everyone else doesn’t make him seem like the star of their lives. Jan 10, 2025 Full Review David Bianculli NPR I like the chemistry between Leary and Misiak as father and daughter, and I like the setting. But I'm not sure how strongly the series will develop. Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times I was a little doubtful to begin with but really did enjoy it, even on a second viewing of the three available episodes, and increasingly as the series pushed at the boundaries of its premise. Jan 4, 2025 Full Review Rob Owen Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Leary plays an angry guy, as usual, and while some of the geopolitical commentary proves cutting, the father-daughter relationship tussle is pretty much the sitcom pabulum you’d expect. Jan 7, 2025 Full Review Randy Dankievitch Processed Media There's a bit of a more solemn, contemplative side lurking just underneath the surface of "Pilot", which is where Going Dutch holds a lot of its intriguing potential - even if most of said potential still feels unrealized by the end of the first episode. Rated: C+ Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Joel Keller Decider There were a couple of chuckleworthy moments where we see soldiers making cheese and other non-military activities, but we know that for Going Dutch to succeed, we’re going to have to explore all the characters beyond what we saw in the pilot. J C I would so much like this show to have more episodes. So funny and refreshing. It has both, silly jokes and on point humour. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Travis B As a Veteran and a German this is highly offensive and disrespectful. The writers put no effort in making this funny or entertaining to watch. I love these cast members but they are like an improv troupe trying to deliver this Ai based dialogue Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/25 Full Review y y There are two characters who may reward watching: the daughter/former base commander, and the local woman/love interest who runs an office to help sex workers after getting a Ph.D. on "intersectional feminism in late capitalism". Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/25 Full Review Mark G As a Veteran of The US Army, I would rather this be an Air force Base because it would be more realistic. But it’s TV and Not Reality so I Will watch and Enjoy. I would like to see more of Dennis Leary’s angry rants but so far so Good. Hopefully they will get it a little stronger and it will stick around for a while. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Roland D No one that served honorably would like this. Absolute disgrace to see out military portrayed like this. I know it’s supposed to be a “slack” base, but it looks like what would happen if Weird Al took over the military. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Charlie W I thought the first episode was very funny. A military base in the Netherlands specializing in cheese, laundry, and bowling, and the colonel with a stick up his rear finds himself seated next to the head of Stroopdorf's chamber of commerce, who looks like a female Viking without horns and a helmet, and turns out to be the owner of the local brothel. You can't make this s*** up, but someone did. Ha! I hope we see more of the "interpreter." Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Read all reviews
