What to Know

Critics Consensus

Grounded by reliably terrific performances from Emily Watson and Olivia Williams, Dune: Prophecy lacks the spice of Denis Villeneuve's films but compensates with addictively perilous palace intrigue.

Carol Midgley Times (UK) Even if you’re a Dune nerd, I bet it will be complicated. Needlessly so, some might say. Rated: 3/5 Nov 27, 2024 Full Review Phillip Maciak The New Republic On its own terms, Dune: Prophecy is a fine show. It’s filled with excellent performances, dank but compelling production design, and intriguing little twists and turns. But it feels hemmed in by its status as a prequel. Nov 26, 2024 Full Review Gayle Sequeira The Hollywood Reporter No show whose description entails the term “space witches” should ever be this dull. Nov 23, 2024 Full Review Paula Vázquez Prieto La Nación (Argentina) The road to the conclusion may offer the strongest course, but the universe created by Herbert and the expectation of Villeneuve's films had stimulated the appetite too much for a dinner that leaves us wanting more. [Full review in Spanish] Jan 7, 2025 Full Review Nandini Ramnath Scroll.in The world building is immersive – the costumes are especially attractive – but the plot itself is neither terribly interesting nor compelling. Dec 28, 2024 Full Review Chris Revelle Pajiba A generic genre drama with so much nothing happening that it fails to be appreciably Dune in plot or presentation. Richard B I thought it was very well done. Don't understand all the hate. Nothing is ever going to be as good as the first 3 Dune books. For me the show was better then 75% of the stuff out there 🤷. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/13/25 Full Review Mike S I've seen ALL of the Dune films since the original release in 1984 and watched in the Theater. This new series is a slow burn, drawn out sequences on the origins of the Bene Gesserits. You will be in for a huge disappointment, if you were looking forward to watching the original great hand-to-hand fighting scenes or any of the incredible tech weapons from the '84 film. Few if any sand worm scenes. Watcher beware! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Josh F I loved it! Valya and Tula are such interesting and complicated characters. The motives are complex. I’m loving the power struggle between the sisterhood and this unknown entity. The plot just continues to thicken and I’m ready for more! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Olivia D It’s a masterclass in exactly what not to do in creating a piece of art. Absolutely every piece of information is ham-handedly fed to the audience in character info dumps, and absolutely everyone greets one another by their full name and title. This is a show who thinks its audience is stupid, and its an embarrassment to the two spectacular Villeneuve movies, and makes an incredibly compelling case as to why they should not continue on in the franchise without him. Don’t waste your time on this show. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/11/25 Full Review Simon W Visually it follows the style of the recent Villeneuve films and is perfectly fine for the most part. I just found it ploddingly dull as characters infodumped at each other for three episodes, and I called it quits there. Not sure it's fair to blame the script entirely, basing anything on Herbert Jnr's lacklustre prequel novels was a brave decision, but it relies so heavily on telling rather than showing that there's little subtlety to anything which happens. Travis Fimmel seems like he's having fun hamming it up though, so there is that. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review M J This show keeps trying to introduce Dune lore and elements we are familiar with but feels completely out of place. Name dropping and references feel carelessly dropped into the story. We want stories like this rich, and compelling. This isn’t it. This is written and directed so poorly I don’t understand how this production was put together and green-lit… Have we learned nothing from all the huge flops over the past few years? Hire talented people and let them create good stories. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Read all reviews
