Last week I crocheted around wooden beads to make a nursing/teething necklace and now I am crocheting around a wooden ring to make a baby toy! I love this little perched owl and I hope you are inspired to make your own! This petite owl would be cute just by itself as well. I used Lion Brand cotton bonbon yarn which is equivalent to size 2 crochet thread. This pattern will probably not work very well with worsted weight yarn. If you are looking for an owl made with worsted weight yarn, you can follow my Crochet Owl Amigurumi Family tutorial.
Please remember that this toy should only be used under constant supervision. All parts should be sewn on as well as possible. I think it would also make a wonderful ornament!
Materials:
– Lion Brand cotton Bonbon yarn (size 2 crochet thread) in Nature colors
– Size F 3.75mm Crochet Hook
– Poly-fil stuffing
– 6mm Safety Eyes
– Tapestry Needle
– Natural Wood Circle Ring 2 2/8 diameter
Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
Owl Pattern:
Finished owl measures about 2.25 x 2 inches
Starting with pink yarn
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC inside ring, join to first SC and continue to crochet in rounds
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around (16 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around (24 SC)
Round 4-5: SC in each stitch around (24 SC)
Change to purple yarn
Round 6-7: SC in each stitch around (24 SC)
Change to light purple yarn
Round 8: SC in each stitch around (24 SC)
Change to yellow yarn
Round 9-12: SC in each stitch around (24 SC)
Round 13: SC decrease, SC in next 2, repeat around
Fasten off leaving a long tail. You will stitch the top together AFTER you add the eyes, nose and wings.
Eyes (make 2):
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join to first SC, fasten off and leave long tail (12 SC)
Sew eyes onto body using the light purple line as guide to where the bottom of the eyes should be.
After sewing the eyes on, add a black safety eye to the middle of each one.
Beak:
Using your tapestry needle, stitch an upside down triangle between the eyes. Continue to sew the yarn on to fill in the triangle.
Wings (make 2):
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, join to first SC, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in the first 4 stitches, HDC +DC + chain 1+HDC in the next stitch, SC in the last stitch. Join to first SC and fasten off leaving long tail.
Sew onto sides of owl. I chose to sew only half the wings on so they would stick out… but I think I may sew them completely down on my next owl.
Tip: sew one of the wings over the place where you made the color changes to hide the seam.
Feet (make 2):
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 5 HDC inside ring. Do not join, pull tight.
Sew onto ring and then sew onto bottom of owl.
How to crochet around the wooden ring:
make a slip knot and pull it through the ring so the knot is behind the ring and your yarn is going through the middle. Put hook through knot, yarn over your hook and pull through the loop.
The leaves are a free pattern by Mamachee!

A very cute pattern – so very kind of you to share (this and others). How do you get the owl to stay up straight without flopping over the ring? I had to do a lot of knots then hide them with “leaves.”

I know this post is old but if it can help someone else .
Personally I crocheted 2 flowers and leaves that I put on each side of the ring and I blocked the owl between at the level of the legs so that it does not fall anymore.
Have a nice day 🙂
