My book for creative stitchers

Creative Stitches for Contemporary Embroidery book cover

If you enjoy my site you will gain real value from my book:  Creative Stitches for Contemporary Embroidery: Visual Guide to 120 Essential Stitches for Stunning Designs

Feeling stale? Wondering how to add sparkle to your embroidery? I have aimed Creative Stitches for Contemporary Embroidery to be suitable for both beginners and seasoned embroiderers. It introduces techniques to encourage your creative interpretations of stitches. I guide you towards discovering play-points in your embroidery by varying the height and width; by stacking stitches; or by filling multiple rows with the same stitch. With creative variations and demonstrations of tiny tweaks, You will be ready to head off down your own creative path and, of course, illustrated with plenty of eye candy!

Please note if you buy one of my books via this link as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

Thread Twisties!

Experimenting with different threads can be expensive. You would normally have to buy a whole skein of each type of thread. My thread twisties are a combination of different threads to use in creative hand embroidery. These enable you to try out stitching with something other than stranded cotton. For the price of just a few skeins, you can experiment with a bundle of threads of luscious colours and many different textures.

These are creative embroiders threads. With them, I hope to encourage you to experiment. Each Twistie is a thread bundle containing silk, cotton, rayon and wool. Threads range from extra fine (the same thickness as 1 strand of embroidery floss) to chunky couchable textured yarns. All threads have a soft and manageable drape. Twisting them around a needle makes experimental hand embroidery an interesting journey rather than a battle.  Many are hand dyed by me. All are threads I use. You may find a similar thread twist but no two are identical.

You will find my thread twisties in the Pintangle shop here.

  1. When will the stitch dictionary book come out? Can’t wait as I suggested it a long time ago and think it will be very useful. I couldn’t access the Sur Gillies either, hope it gets fixed so we can read it. Thanks Sharon!

    Kim
  2. Today when I clicked on the ‘read more’ of the sur-gillies-design post, it just went to the Stitch Dictionary.
Where can I find the rest of the Sur Gillies Design post?

    Lorri F
    1. Lorri, Tammy and Sarah this was a faulty post sorry – I was trying to delete an old post from 2004 which no longer had an active link.I trashed it then when I wanted to do a last minute check on it I had to pull it out of the trash bin. I did not realise it would re-publish it. WordPress obviously decided that the world should know about my housekeeping! I am sorry it happened.

  3. After I originally left a comment I appear to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on every time a comment is added I get four
emails with the exact same comment. There has to be a
way you are able to remove me from that service? Thanks a lot!

  4. I have purchased your new book “The visual guide to Crazy Quilting design”. I just love it. I have also just purchased Set 1 & Set 2 of your templates. Do you happen to have a book containing all of the stitches in your stitch dictionary?

    MARY DUBIEL
    1. Hi Mary – thanks for your question – I am working on a stitch book now. It wont contain all that is online as they wont all fit in one book but it will certainly be a best of for contemporary embroiderers

      sharonb
    1. Hi Brenda – it is only available online at the moment – I am going to suggest it to my publisher but with it being free online they may not want to take the risk of publication

      sharonb
      1. I hope they’ll do it. I collect stitch bibles; each one brings something new and different to the table. Some of them even have progects or suggest motifs/ design elements that are suggested by (or show off) the different stitches or stutch types.

        Susan Farmer
  5. Wonderful what you can do with simple stitches!
I love embroidering and expierience what you can do with all kinds of threads and trying stitches and how to use your piece of cloth.

    Geertje A. Westra
  6. I AM 80 YEARS OLD! I have been stitching at one thing or another for at least 73 years. My Italian mother taught me cross stitch and put me on to dresser scarves, hankies, tablecloths, pillow cases, etc. I learned many stitches from her and her friends. Well, she is gone but I still have a needle and thread and your dictionary has helped me with many projects over the past ten years. Congratulations and continued success.
p.s. temari is my love now. They serve no function other than being beautiful and that’s not so bad either/

    Gloria
    1. Hey Sharon! I received an email discussing Sur Gillies Designs, but when I try to continue reading the post, it takes me to your stitch dictionary. I cannot find a way to finish reading more about the topic introduced in your email.

      Tammy Miller
  7. This has got to be the best website for Embroidery on the internet. Personally, I think it’s the best site ever – you gave such detail and pictures on how to do the stitches – it’s absolutely wonderful. Thank you for all your hard work.

    THERESA CHALONE
  8. Thank you so much Sharon! you are an amazing artist. I so appreciate the details and the colors that help me visualize and learn. I will be practicing a lot of these stiches this summer. What a great resource. Again Blessings to you to prosper in all you attempt.

    Norma
  9. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication; I know your stitch dictionary will be very handy to all stitchers. I had started collecting and printing your excellent tutorials for many of your stitches and filed them in notebooks.

    Patsie Blanchette
  10. I am beginning a new project that will require lots of embroidery and will test my meager skill. This is a resource that I will use often and with pleasure. It will make the learning so much more fun with this variety at my fingertips. I’m discovering stitches new to me with every click of my mouse. Thank you for making it available.
