Peter Capaldi has teased viewers with details on Jenna Coleman 's exit from Doctor Who .

In September the actress quit her role as the Time Lord's sidekick Clara Oswald after three years .

She told Nick Grimshaw on Radio 1: "I have left the TARDIS, I have, it’s happened. I’ve filmed my last scenes. It was emotional. It’s been in the works for a very long time."

Little is known about Clara's actual exit but Capaldi has revealed the scenes made him "weepy" for the first time as an actor and let viewers in on the pressing subject.

Appearing on Nick's breakfast show, Peter said: "She’s fabulous in the scene. I don’t want to go into what. It’s very clever what happens in it, but it’s very sad. It’s really sad.

"She’s great fun and wonderful to work with. I’ve had a great time with her.

"I don’t usually get weepy when I’m working but I found it really sad to say goodbye to her."

Speaking about "saying goodbye", he added: "I still see her, so it’s not like saying goodbye to Jenna in person, but you say goodbye to the character, and it becomes the focus of your emotion and perhaps all of the things you’d like to say to that person – like how wonderful she’s been to me."

On the actual moment(s), Capaldi said viewers will not be able to predict a thing.

He said: "It’s not quite what you think is gonna happen. You think what’s gonna happen is gonna happen and then something else happens.

"It’s always clever the way these things are done on Doctor Who, so get lots of hankies ready. It’s sad over a number of weeks.’

The ninth series of Doctor Who continues on Saturday at 8pm
