Congratulations, Louise Henderson, PhD, Professor and Program Co-Lead of Cancer Epidemiology at the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Louise was awarded an NOA for her new 5-year R01 titled, “OPTimizing surveillance in lung cancer survivors with novel IMAging biomarkers and deep-learning (OPTIMAL)” with a start date of 1/1/2025 and year 1 total costs = $968,999. This is a collaboration with Kaiser Permanente Northern California (MPI: Lori Sakoda), Mass General (MPI: Florian Fintelmann), and MIT (co-I: Regina Barzilay). Abstract Over the next decade, the number of lung cancer survivors is expected to rise considerably in the United States, due to an aging and growing population and a shift toward more early-stage lung cancers detected from increased lung cancer screening uptake. After treatment with curative-intent surgery, however, many survivors of early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remain at high risk for lung cancer recurrence or second primary lung cancer (SPLC). To detect recurrence and SPLC at their earliest stages, postoperative imaging surveillance with chest computed tomography (CT) is generally recommended every six months for the first two years and annually thereafter. Yet, this clinical recommendation is based on limited evidence of benefits and harms, with no consideration for individual differences in risk of recurrence or SPLC. Dr. Rebecca Hansen, known to family, friends, and patients alike as “Becca,” recently joined the Pediatric Radiology division at UNC as an Assistant Professor, bringing her passion for patient care and medical education to the department. Rebecca graduated from Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University in 2018 and completed her internship year at Vidant Medical Center at East Carolina University in Internal Medicine. She completed her Diagnostic Radiology Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina before finishing her education at Duke University Hospital with a Fellowship in Pediatric Radiology. In a recent interview, Dr. Hansen shared her journey to UNC Radiology, her commitment to the field, and the joy she finds in her work.   What attracted you to the Department of Radiology at UNC? Finding Home at UNC Returning to UNC felt natural for Dr. Hansen. She completed her undergraduate studies at UNC and was familiar with the warm, collegial environment. “I love the UNC culture,” she says, “During my interview, I was astounded by how friendly everyone was.
