Tips for Painting or Staining Concrete

Before you start your project, consider the following tips to help ensure a smooth process and great results.

  • Make sure the area you’re working in has good ventilation. Set up fans to help move harsh fumes out of the space.
  • Wear the appropriate protective gear and clothing — such as a respirator, cleaning gloves and safety goggles — as specified by the instructions for the material you’re working with. Long pants and closed-toe shoes may also be beneficial.
  • Protect any items in the area that aren’t being stained and can’t be removed from the space.
  • Take note of the weather. You should plan to work in dry conditions and cooler temperatures.
  • Be aware of dry times — there are different stages, and they vary based on several factors, including temperature, humidity and manufacturer. For example, some stains may be dry to the touch in 1 hour but won’t be dry enough to walk on for at least 24 hours. If you’re placing furniture back on the concrete, note the dry time for when it’ll be furniture ready. Always refer to the manufacturer instructions for specific dry times for your product.
  • Generally, two coats of stain are recommended. Check the label on your product for specific information.
  • Consider additional features, such as anti-skid additives to increase safety on surfaces that could potentially be slippery, and decorative color chips to give garage floors a unique, custom appearance. You can also find stains already formulated with anti-skid features.
