New article published! Future perspectives of Brazilian beef production: what is the role of Silvopastoral systems?

Under the leadership of Closing the efficiency gapGlobal network on Silvopastoral system and Livestock for social development actions networks, and with the full support of the Universidad Federal de São João del-Rei (UFSJ) and Thuenen Instituta new article has been published  on Agroforestry Systems, a global journal publishing original research, reviews, and communications on all aspects of agroforestry.

The development of this paper involved farmers, technicians, researchers, and research institutions (UFSJ, Thuenen & Agribenchmark).

The article presents the results of research conducted by providing scientific evidence about the most common beef production systems in Brazil (also used in the rest of Latin America and Africa) and their sustainability strategies.

It analyses the economic and environmental performance of three beef production systems: classic beef production system (CB), and two types of silvopastoral systems: the integrated crop-livestock-forestry system (ICLFS) and the natural regeneration system (NR) in a comparative case study analysis, against the backdrop of changing production conditions and market requirements. Is it time to rethink Brazil’s beef production systems?

The methodological approach was based on the use of the efficiency matrix developed in Thuenen institute (Germany) & Agribenchmark and presented and adopted by the Action Network ‘Closing the efficiency gap’ in GASL. The matrix is used for comparing baselines (BAU) and alternative land uses, evaluating natural resource efficiency use (NREU).

The results of this study could be used to promote practice change in livestock production in Brazil (or Latin America overall), looking for a different approach (e.g. Natural regeneration of native trees to build up Silvopastoral systems) to promote sustainable production system. This also provides future applied research areas for a better assessment of NREU.

New publication: Multifunctionality and diversity of livestock grazing systems for sustainable food systems throughout the world: Are there learning opportunities for Europe?

07-04-2023 - A new publication on livestock grazing systems produced by the Action Network Restoring Value to Grassland is available here.

Using a multifunctional conceptual model specified for livestock grazing systems (LGS) in different cases in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe, the work showcases how the framework enables the assessment of these systems in a holistic manner that includes four dimensions: production, social, environmental and local development. These dimensions and associated local indicators demonstrate the potentially important contribution that LGS may deliver to sustainable food systems. The work further shows that the management of interactions and trade-offs between LGS functions may be overlooked in the consideration of European food systems and may be improved using such a model in a multi-stakeholder approach.

AGRF session: The cow in the room – the role milk, meat, and eggs play in sustainable food systems transformation

07-09-2022 - While livestock is the fastest growing agriculture sub-sector in Africa, there is growing reluctance to fund it due to strong international opposition to livestock because of publicized negative impacts of industrial livestock systems in terms of high greenhouse emissions and over-consumption of animal-sourced foods.

Join this AGRF session to explore some of the challenging issues around milk, meat and eggs, why we need to change the narrative around sustainable livestock, considering the strong evidence of the positive dimensions livestock bring to the 2030 Agenda and the transformation of African food systems. The session will showcase examples of projects where livestock played a pivotal role in food systems transformation and, through a high-level panel discussion, make a case for increased government and private sector investments in sustainable livestock, especially in Africa.

New report on digitalization in the African livestock sector

23-02-2022 - How can digital solutions be used to promote sustainable livestock value chain development in Africa? Which applications are already available on the market? What are their potentials and risks? The report “Digitalizing the African livestock sector – status quo and future trends for sustainable value chain development” (Link) prepared by the GIZ Programme for Climate-Smart Livestock Systems and the Sector Programme “Sustainable Agriculture”, gives answers to these questions. Over 60 applications have been identified through Internet research. It shows that the sector’s digital transformation is already underway and very dynamic, providing digital solutions that are as diverse as their underling technologies, target groups and value chains. Information and communications technology (ICT) applications range from simple Short Message Services to remind livestock keepers of upcoming due dates for vaccinating their cattle, over the provision of satellite-based vegetation maps to guide pastoralists to the best grazing grounds during droughts, to complex platforms to virtually aggregate animal-source foods produced across the country. The report defines fields of application for the use of ICT within livestock value chains and provides short profiles of solutions which are available in Africa for each field. To give a better understanding of how digital applications work in practice, interviews with inventors and implementers of digital applications complete each chapter.

New publication: an argument against drastic limitation of livestock in the food system

15-02-2022 - Can animal source foods contribute to healthy, sustainable, and ethical diets?  The freshly published article “Animal source foods in healthy, sustainable, and ethical diets - An argument against drastic limitation of livestock in the food system” tackles this question. Criticizing trajectories based on isolated and technical methodological data that portray animal source foods as harmful for the planet, the authors outline perspectives where livestock, taken in alignment with local ecosystems and social contexts, is to be considered as an important part of the solution to improve public health and environmental resilience.  Read the full article here.

Successful GASL regional MSP meeting in China Promotes Sustainable Development in Livestock Industry

The recently concluded Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock (GASL) regional Multi-stakeholder Partnership meeting in China, hosted at the Beijing Friendship Hotel, marked a significant milestone in addressing the evolving landscape of the country's livestock industry. With over 220 attendees, the conference saw active participation from diverse sectors, including businesses, governments, NGOs, and research institutions, fostering a comprehensive dialogue on the drivers of change in the Chinese livestock sector.

The conference, held both in-person and virtually, featured full simultaneous interpretation on Zoom, ensuring a seamless exchange of ideas among the international audience.
