These are photos of some of the ILWU Local 10 members at a rally in Walnut Creek Monday July 19. Cops called the rally to demand “freedom” for BART officer Johannes Mehserle found guilty this month of killing Oscar Grant last year, shooting him in the back while he was lying face down waiting passively to be handcuffed at the Fruitvale BART station in Oakland. Anti-cop demonstrators who were counter-protesting outnumbered the pro-police rally by 400 to 100.

Recalling the police murder of two strikers in the 1934 Big Strike which gave birth to the ILWU, Local 10 has demanded “jail for killer cops” and is calling a mass labor and community rally in front of Oakland City Hall in Sept. Sentencing for Mehserle, the killer cop, is set for November 5.
