The 500 block of North
Howard Street, was first the site of the
Academy of Music, and in the late 1920's, the
site of Baltimore largest theater, the Stanley
Theatre. Only the Mayfair ( AKA
Auditorium ) Theatre building survives one the
block today, and just barely. The block was
known as Kernan's Corner, which also included
the Maryland Theatre
around the corner on Franklin Street. The
Congress Hotel which housed many of the stars
performing at the Academy of Music and
Maryland has been renovated and is still
standing.

  " Kilduff History" goes back
many years with the Academy of Music, with
John Kilduff (Sr) working there as the
doorkeeper. I was able to locate several old
items from the Academy of Music dating back to
the 1880's which will be posted on the site. (
Below ) , a program for the Academy of
Music dated 1920-21, while the theatre was
called the New Academy of Music. A
few years after the program came out, the
theater would be torn down to make way for the
Stanley Theatre.
