Lodge Reimagined

This house is about its location, perched atop a hill with uninterrupted views of San Francisco and Mt Tamalpais. Its scale and design bear the country lodge moniker.
Our clients were attracted to the scale and presence of the building and wanted to create a home to raise a family. Although it retains its classical appeal and volume, the house had previously been poorly renovated by previous owners and felt too traditional and stuffy. They understood the friendliness that existed in the building but felt that it could be moderated and modernized for today’s lifestyle. The clients came to Richardson Pribuss with the challenge of renovating the house and transforming it into a timeless
and elegant design.
Layers from previous renovations were edited, preserving elements when appropriate. Details were reinterpreted, and interior spaces were reconfigured. We created new openings for more oversized doors and windows, celebrating the connection with the oak woodlands outside and allowing for improved airflow. Large structural columns were returned to their natural wood tones, reintroducing needed warmth and cohesion with nature.
The interiors were updated extensively, paying homage to the classic lodge ethos and focusing on using modernized details combined with old-world craft. The handcrafted taper on the iron staircase handrail exemplifies how this combination creates a timeless effect. Similarly, an updated stone hearth encompassing the fireplace is constructed with an old-world distinction of scale yet executed with modern precision and restraint.
While the project is all about understated beauty and simplicity, the home also rises to the occasion when it comes to luxury living. After much care was taken in the improvement, the house is a grand lodge reimagined for the contemporary lifestyle.
