The Virtual Quilting Bee is a free quilt-along with patterns for 16 different quilt blocks as well as discussion about quilting supplies, choosing fabric for a quilt, and how to finish and bind a quilt.
UPDATE: this Quilt Along was hosted in 2012. Since that time some of the original block tutorials are no longer available because not all of the designers have maintained their original sites. (It costs time and money to maintain a website, so totally understandable.) I leave this quilt along series available as a free resource, but unfortunately can't do anything about missing individual block tutorials. If you are looking for other 8" x 8" finished quilt block tutorials there is a whole list here.
Welcome to the Virtual Quilting Bee! The first four posts of this series consist of introduction to what this Quilting Bee is all about, Quilting supplies, Choosing Fabric, and Basic Quilt-making techniques. For the following 8 months we will have a new 8" block every other Friday starting March 8.
This quilt measures about 70" x 70". If you would like a larger finished quilt, I suggest making more individual blocks.
VIRTUAL QUILTING BEE FABRIC REQUIREMENTS:
- 24-30 Fat ⅛ pieces (11" x 18") or 12-15 Fat Quarters should be enough for getting started on the quilt blocks themselves and have yardage for the setting triangles as well for the prints version.
- If you are using a fat ⅛th bundle for your blocks - specifically a Happy Go Lucky fat ⅛ bundle - cut a 7" square* from each fabric except the white on white dots (although I recommend not using the other prints with white backgrounds either, if you can avoid them). You will need 32 total 7" squares. Set these aside for your setting squares when the blocks are finished.
- Sashing fabric: 1 ½ yards (I'm using the white on white Lucky Penny dot)
- First border: ½ yard
- Outside border: 1 ½ yards
- Binding: ½ yard
- Backing 4 yards *edited
There is a Flickr Group for sharing your own photos and versions of the blocks we will be creating.
