A church-related liberal arts college is a place where the teacher tries to maintain the balance between the freedom of open intellectual inquiry and commitment to the historic Christian faith.

The college can foster this environment in a number of ways:

  1. Allow the creation of a climate where faith and learning are openly encouraged, with the overall goal of of permitting students to mature intellectually, spiritually, culturally and socially.
  2. Affirm that scholarly pursuits are valid expressions of Christian commitment.
  3. Allow for the diversity of expression in life and culture.
  4. Encourage tangible, practical expressions of social concerns via participation in ministries to the disadvantaged.
This environment can produce young people who, in addition to the mastery of a certain field of knowledge, will embody the ``liberal arts skills:''

  1. The knowledge of oneself.
  2. The promotion and use of critical judgment.
  3. Effective written and oral communication skills.
  4. The ability to work effectively with others.
  5. The establishment of meaningful values with a clear sense of purpose.

The goals and purposes of a computer science department include the development of professionals who can author high quality solutions to real problems, communicate effectively with people as well as machines, and adapt in a rapidly changing technological environment. The department goals support and are supported by the the institutional goals. Thus, a liberal arts school is the only place where computer science can be correctly, humanely taught.
