CEO Edwin Lap Reflects on 21 Years of Bringing Crazy Ideas to Life
My brother and I started our company in 1999. This was basically right around that time that AOL got popular, when Netscape was the go to browser, and the annoying “You Got Mail!” sound bite played in offices across the world. My brother got his first job as a graphic designer in Amsterdam and I was working for Starwood Hotels and resorts.
On a trip to South Africa, my brother mentioned that he had designed websites in Flash – remember that? I thought those were so cool, that we should start a company. We had a simple formula: he designs and I sell. We got a loan from my father to buy the best Apple equipment, and we have been at this crazy experience ever since.
For these past 21 years, we’ve excelled at bringing to life our motto: “We get shit done”. I get more business from frustrated clients who initially made the wrong decision to go with a cheap team. In the 20 years that we have done this, we have only been fired once. On the creative side, we still take pride in good design. We know that good design and development ain’t cheap, but we’re here to deliver it.
Our customers recognize us for our high-quality design and development again and again! Clutch and its sister site The Manifest are the preeminent ratings and reviews platform for B2B service providers. Clutch provides business tips and showcases leaders across service lines. It’s great to be recognized for all our hard work as a top e-commerce development firm in San Diego on Clutch!
In a recent review, a managing partner at Growth Partner praised our Shopify development work for his venture capital firm.
“With their strong CX/UX mindset, we can rely on them to consider points we haven’t thought about.” Danny DeMichele, Managing Partner at Growth Partner
People ask me often how we have been able to stay afloat and successful for so long – it’s because we love what we do. I love technology, the ever changing digital landscape, new platforms, even old legacy platforms. If you do not like what you do, then why do it in the first place? Right now, when times are tough, it is important to invest in yourself, build out your social profiles, websites etc.
A friend of mine called it “Recession Marketing” – the best time to spend is now. If you’re looking to invest in your business and its web design, contact us today!
I recently saw a post about the new Yahoo logo and re-brand. I was dumbfounded by the new look, as to me it looked like nothing special. The agency, Pentagram, a well-known branding group out of NYC came up with this new look.

To me, it seemed very boring and probably ended up costing in the millions, however, I am not a designer. I posted this question to a group of creatives and received some interesting comments.
“Probably it took them months and many rounds of revisions. I don’t hate it.”
“Its a whole identity created around the brand and their existing strategy. Simplicity is the key thing to a strong identity. As for the work, these kinds of project is all about alignment with brand strategy, stakeholders and the customer. Not an easy task I can tell you!”
“Here’s what I know. It’s an improvement and I would have done the same and only charged them $50,000 which was probably 1/4 of the price”
“No it’s finally properly balanced, mature/ bold and still playfully like it was in the 90’s .. like it!”
It is interesting that the creatives, designers and art directors love it, but most of us hate it. Regardless, if you need a good logo, branding or a solid website, you do not need to spend millions. Contact us for a free quote.
One of the best quotes I ever read was “If you think good design is expensive, you should look at the cost of bad design. … should look at the cost of bad design.” – Dr. Ralf Speth, CEO Jaguar.
Design is not cheap, nor is quality development, but there are ways to find a middle ground. I am not talking about 99 designs for logos or Upwork for some cheap dev work. It comes down to what the client values as far as quality. If the CEO’s son who just graduated from high-School and is a graphic designer, can create a brand identity for cheap, be my guest.
However, we at Cofamedia would rather not work with these type of companies. Look, Logos do not need to cost a fortune, but it takes knowledge, creativity, and talent to do proper work. In the end we get to understand whether the client values what you can do for them. If they do not appreciate that, then that is their loss
We are excited to be recognized as one of the Top 20 Digital Marketing Agencies Of 2019 That Won’t Break The Bank!
A few days ago, we received a call from a prospect who was very excited to tell us about their new product launch. An energy boost powder, sugar-free and with good taste. They had developed a brand identity, a brand strategy, designed a good website, developed on the Shopify platform, but sales were below initial expectations. While the company excelled on the branding, design, and platform, they totally lacked an effective marketing strategy. We have seen this time and time again. The “Build it and they will come”, simply does not work, no matter how good your product is.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO), Paid Search (PPC), Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) and Social Media Advertising (FB, Twitter, Snapchat, etc) need to be part of the planning process – not an afterthought. If you do go this route, you will always be chasing the mighty dollar and have a real hard time analyzing & getting conversions.
Our friends at Design Rush have some good tips on how to develop an Effective and Successful Digital Marketing Strategy.

I was fortunate to attend the recent World Wearable Congress 2015 (#wwc2015) in San Francisco last week. I attended the inaugural Glazed Con conference in 2013 and back then there only about 200 attendees. This year there were over 1000 people from all over the world including Germany, Iran, Hong Kong, Russia, Israel and yes even a flying Dutchman.
The world of web development continues to change as the latest trends are revealed. Many careers offer continuing education to further develop the necessary skills to remain on the cutting edge; anyone in the web development niche understands how important it is to stay on top of the game in the industry. An important component of maximizing your skill set is to participate in the many conferences that are geared at helping you gain new connections, reveal the changes that are occurring in the development arena and explore hundreds of vendors with the best new products available. It is probable that several of these conferences are in your area or close-by.
2015 – The Year of Wearable Technology
Last year definitely proved to be a major one for wearable technology, including smart watches, smart jewelry and fitness bands. Apple announced their upcoming watch and Samsung released a plethora of devices. Start-ups like Pebble and Misfit were introduced to the scene, trying to get a slice of the market alongside name brand players like Microsoft and Google. In fact, an estimated $52 million in sales was reached in 2014. So how will 2015 stack against the previous year?
According to The Guardian, the launching of wearable headphones that monitor and measures your heart’s electrical activity and sends the information to your smart phone is right around the corner. The Apple Watch is not the only thing to look forward to this year; a hair slide that can tell you how much ultraviolet exposure you’ve had on a hot summer’s day is also expected to launch this season as well.
Recently I had a discussion with a Search Consultant whom mentioned how times are changing in regards to SEO and digital. He mentioned he had a client whom is extremely savvy and probably could be running some aspects of the SEO campaign themselves. These situations can be tricky as the client is very easy to communicate with for efficacy but on the same coin may challenge the authority of strategy from time to time.
